- Delta governor Sheriff Oborevwori officially left the PDP for the ruling APC following a closed-door meeting in Asaba
- The defection was confirmed by his Chief Press Secretary, who said it followed wide consultations and was in Delta’s long-term interest
- Political analysts described the move as a strategic realignment that may reshape the South-South's political landscape before the next general elections
Delta State governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has officially announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a major political shift in the South-South region.
The announcement followed a closed-door meeting held on Wednesday at the Government House in Asaba.
Confirming the development, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, stated that the decision was made “after wide consultations with political stakeholders and in the interest of Delta’s long-term development.”
Governor Oborevwori, who won the 2023 gubernatorial election on the PDP ticket, was formally welcomed into the APC by senior party figures in a move already being described by political observers as a significant realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Though full details of the defection are yet to be made public, insiders suggest that the Governor’s move may trigger further political reshuffling both within the state and on the national stage.
Oborevwori’s switch is seen as a major boost for the APC in the Niger Delta region, where the PDP has traditionally held strong influence.
