- The party's presidential primary is set to hold through direct voting across 8,809 wards nationwide
The All Progressives Congress has rescheduled its governorship and State House of Assembly primary elections in Bauchi, Kwara and Zamfara states while unveiling detailed guidelines for its forthcoming presidential primary election.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, disclosed the decisions in separate statements issued on Thursday, May 21, following approvals by the National Working Committee.
According to the APC, the governorship primary elections in Bauchi and Kwara states will now hold on Friday, May 22, 2026, while the State House of Assembly primaries for Maradun I and Maradun II constituencies in Zamfara State have been moved to Sunday, May 24, 2026.
Morka said the changes were made after consultations with relevant stakeholders to ensure a smooth and credible process.
“The All Progressives Congress hereby announces the rescheduling of the Governorship Primary Elections in Bauchi and Kwara States to Friday, May 22, 2026,” the statement read.
“Similarly, the party has approved the rescheduling of the State House of Assembly Primary Elections for Maradun I and Maradun II constituencies in Zamfara State to Sunday, May 24, 2026.”
He added that the decision was taken “in furtherance of the Party’s commitment to ensuring transparent, orderly, peaceful and credible primary election process.”
The development comes as the ruling party also confirmed plans to conduct its presidential primary election through a direct primary system across the country’s 8,809 wards.
Under the approved guidelines, all registered APC members will be eligible to vote for the presidential aspirant of their choice during the exercise.
“All registered members of the party shall be eligible to vote for the presidential aspirant of their choice in each of the 8,809 wards in the country,” the statement noted.
The APC explained that results from each ward would be collated at the local government level by designated officers appointed by state coordinators and the National Working Committee.
According to the party, collated results from the 774 local government areas are expected to be submitted to the Presidential Primary Election Committee in Abuja on May 24, 2026.
The party also announced that state coordinators and collation officers would supervise the process across all states and the Federal Capital Territory to ensure compliance with the APC constitution and the Electoral Act.
The APC stated that the provisions contained in its previously released “Procedure for the Conduct of Direct and Consensus Mode of Primaries” would guide the conduct of the exercise.
The announcement comes amid ongoing APC primaries nationwide and follows earlier endorsements of President Bola Tinubu as the party’s sole presidential candidate at both national and zonal levels.
Labour Party reschedules 2027 Presidential, Governorship primaries to May 30
Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that the Labour Party had rescheduled its 2027 presidential, governorship, House of Representatives and House of Assembly primary elections to 30 May, citing the need to accommodate major national and religious events.
The party explained that the adjustment became necessary due to a clash between the party’s original timetable and significant national engagements, including the Sallah celebrations and activities marking Democracy Day anniversary events associated with 29 May.
