Prominent activist Aisha Yesufu has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), as she declared her intention to contest for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.

Yesufu made the announcement in a statement shared on her X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, citing a renewed conviction about Nigeria’s political future and her continued support for former presidential candidate Peter Obi.

“The next couple of days will define the future of this nation. This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the ADC to join the NDC as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works,” she wrote.

She explained that her earlier decision to back Obi influenced her move to the ADC, adding that her latest defection was a continuation of that political alignment.

“When I give my word, I keep it. My decision to support HE Peter Obi first led me to the ADC. To continue to honour the promise I am joining the NDC,” she stated.

Beyond switching parties, Yesufu confirmed her ambition to represent the FCT in the Senate, signalling a transition from activism to elective politics.

“This time I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat,” she added.

Reflecting on her time in the ADC, Yesufu said she had fulfilled all her responsibilities and ensured what she described as a “clean transition.” She expressed gratitude to party members, noting that her experience serving in various leadership roles—including as sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair and secretary—was both rewarding and instructive.

“I was fortunate to work with great and amazing people whose goal was a better country. I am grateful for the opportunity to have served,” she said, describing the experience as invaluable.

Her defection comes amid ongoing political realignments within Nigeria’s opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 elections. The recent move by Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to join the NDC has triggered a wave of defections, particularly from the ADC, as politicians reposition themselves for the المقبلة electoral cycle.

Analysts suggest that Yesufu’s entry into the senatorial race could add momentum to the NDC’s growing profile, especially in the FCT, where political competition is expected to intensify in the coming years.
