The Labour Party has inaugurated an eight-member screening committee to oversee the screening of aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development was announced in a public notice jointly signed by the party’s National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, and National Secretary, Iheanacho Obioma, on Friday in Abuja.
According to the notice, the committee was constituted in line with the party’s constitution and electoral guidelines guiding the 2026 primaries.
The committee will be chaired by Usman and includes Mrs Oluchi Okpara, Mohammed Salisu, Mrs Martina Umana, Mrs Deborah Yusuf, Chibuzo Okereke, and Dr Olu Ayewo as members, while Obioma will serve as secretary.
The party explained that the panel would handle the screening of aspirants contesting presidential, governorship, and National Assembly positions ahead of the party primaries.
It added that the committee would “verify the authenticity of documents submitted by aspirants” and ensure all contestants comply with the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act 2026, and guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Under the timetable released by the party, screening for House of Assembly and governorship aspirants is scheduled for May 20, while National Assembly and presidential hopefuls will appear before the committee on May 22.
The Labour Party also urged members of the screening committee to discharge their responsibilities with integrity as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that the Labour Party had scheduled its presidential primary election for May 23 as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The party’s Senior Special Adviser (Media) to the Interim National Chairman, Ken Asogwa, said the date forms part of the party’s approved timetable for its primaries.
Asogwa explained that the timetable was finalised during a statutory National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, which was monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
