  • The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Alausa, has joined officials in London to receive President Bola Tinubu
  • The visit precedes Tinubu’s official United Kingdom engagements focused on economic diplomacy and investment
  • Alausa revealed that the talks will centre on advancing Nigeria’s second phase of TVET reforms which aims to tackle youth unemployment and skills mismatch through technical education

The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, has arrived in London alongside senior government officials to receive President Bola Tinubu ahead of key engagements focused on education and skills development.

The visit comes before the President’s official state activities in the United Kingdom and is expected to centre on forging strategic partnerships with international institutions, investors, and development organisations, particularly in the area of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

In a statement issued on Wednesday, March 18, Alausa revealed that discussions would prioritise advancing the second phase of Nigeria’s TVET reform programme.

The phase will involve collaboration with global partners such as Big Win Philanthropy, as well as stakeholders in the creative and tourism industries.

The minister noted that the Federal Government is intensifying efforts to reposition technical education as a critical driver of youth employment and economic growth, especially amid growing concerns about graduate unemployment and the widening skills gap.

Nigeria has long struggled with an education system widely criticised for being overly theoretical, often leaving graduates without the practical skills needed in today’s labour market.

According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, youth unemployment and underemployment remain pressing issues, with millions of young Nigerians either out of work or engaged in low-productivity jobs.

Experts have consistently advocated for stronger investment in vocational and technical training as a solution to this challenge, particularly in sectors such as construction, manufacturing, ICT, and the creative economy.

“As part of the London engagements, the minister is also expected to meet with the leadership of the University of Birmingham to advance an ongoing partnership with the University of Lagos. The collaboration is aimed at strengthening research, faculty exchange, and institutional capacity.
“In a related development, discussions are also scheduled with Coventry University on plans to establish a full campus in Nigeria, an initiative that could expand access to international-standard higher education within the country,” the statement noted.

The initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s broader goal of internationalising Nigeria’s education sector, attracting foreign investment, and reducing the rising trend of education migration.

Currently, Nigeria loses billions of naira annually as students pursue education abroad, particularly in countries like the United Kingdom and Canada.

Stakeholders believe that encouraging foreign universities to establish local campuses could help reverse this trend while strengthening domestic educational capacity.

The President’s visit is also expected to bolster Nigeria’s economic diplomacy strategy, as the administration seeks to deepen bilateral ties with the UK and attract investment into key sectors.

Officials say the outcomes of the London meetings could significantly influence the next phase of reforms in Nigeria’s education sector, especially in technical training, global partnerships, and infrastructure development.

Alausa expressed confidence that the engagements would deliver meaningful results, emphasising that strong international collaborations are vital to achieving Nigeria’s development goals.
