- Social media influencer and medical doctor Chinonso Egemba, also known as Aproko doctor, raised alarm over Trump's suspension of HIV funding in Nigeria
- He cited the potential consequences for the country's healthcare system
- Aproko doctor further emphasised the importance of proper condom use, noting that wearing two condoms at once can increase the risk of sexually transmitted infections
Popular online personality Chinonso Egemba, known as Aproko Doctor, has voiced serious concerns regarding the suspension of funding for HIV programs in Nigeria due to the actions of former US President Donald Trump.
This funding, part of the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), has been vital in the global fight against HIV/AIDS for over two decades.
Aproko Doctor pointed out that Nigeria has the world's second-highest number of people living with HIV. He emphasised that without adequate treatment, most affected will progress to AIDS.
He stated: “If you don't treat HIV, almost everyone affected will develop AIDS. To treat HIV, they need ART drugs and these drugs have become so effective that a HIV positive person can no longer transmit the virus if the level of the virus is suppressed.
“These drugs are expensive, so a lot of the drugs available are donated to us. Now that donation has been cut, what does this mean? ”
He further highlighted the risk of the situation, stating that, “Infections will rise, currently it's close to 200,000 infections every year; People will die from AIDS, drugs are not available. Our already burdened healthcare system will be burdened further which might be make or break.”
He urged Nigeria to take charge of its healthcare system instead of relying on external donations, stating, "Now is the time to take our health system seriously."
Aproko doctor schools netizen on condom use
Reacting to Trump's suspension of HIV funding in Africa with a humorous comment by @Mbahdey4u: "Trump dun pause funds for HIV treatment to Africa If you dey wear one condom before, double am!!!"
However, Aproko Doctor quickly pointed out the flaw in this approach. He explained that wearing two condoms at once can increase the risk of sexually transmitted infections. He stated, "Double condoms actually increase your risk of getting sexually transmitted infections.
The materials rub against each other and friction makes them both come weaker and tear. Exposing you. When it comes to condoms, two heads are not better than one.”
Reactions trail Aproko Doctor's post
Here are some reactions below:
@preshstone commented: “@aproko_doctor they said you should be complaining to the Nigerian government about these withdrawals bad states of some hospitals instead of starting a fundraising campaign”
@LovedCarefully commented: “The fear of HIV has brought people back to this double condom matter 😂 You must be born again: Stop fornicating, people.”
@jojo_Amandy commented: “Maybe if our senators and executive can sell off their SUVs and private jets, we would be able to fund it ourselves.”
@realadeboyetobi commented: “I am just really glad that you didn’t join the bandwagon of orange man bad. He owes us nothing, our government needs to step up”
@NFC_Analyst_Joe commented: “Why can't Nigeria allocate its resources to address these diseases? Perhaps if the USA stopped providing financial aid to African countries, African leaders might take responsibility for fixing their nations. After all, Africa isn't inherently poor—it only appears that way due to mismanagement and corruption. Why should another country be responsible for funding Nigeria or Africa's expenses?”
@Lifeinsolace commented: “Maybe we should start preaching sexual purity and personal hygiene. We should now be responsible for ourselves and our health.”
@Ibunkun_tayo commented: “Cobra Effect. The solution to Trump's problems that became a Nigerian problem. I am concerned about the rate of accrued infections that will grow.”
