- Here are some tips to help you build a functional wardrobe for your baby
Welcoming a new baby into the world is an exciting and joyful experience. As you prepare for your baby’s arrival, there are some essentials to put in place, one of them is buying baby clothes.
As much as it can be an enjoyable task, choosing the right clothes is essential, especially if you have no experience with a newborn. When I was expecting my baby, one task I looked forward to was buying cute little baby clothes without considering what would be comfortable for him, the weather, size, how much to buy and what essentials to buy.
There are factors to consider when choosing clothes for your baby, like climate, comfort, and size.
7 tips for buying the right baby clothes
Here are some tips to consider when buying clothes for your baby during the nesting period.
- Opt for soft, comfortable clothes
When buying clothes, consider the fabric type and opt for soft breathable materials like cotton as it helps to keep your baby cool in hot weather and prevents skin irritation.
- Buy the right size
It might be difficult to know the exact size of your baby’s clothes when you’ve not yet given birth. So, buy a few clothes that are for babies within 0 to 3 months and some for 3 to 6 months. Make sure the clothes won't be too tight and not too loose. Babies tend to outgrow their clothes rapidly, so it is advisable to get clothes a size up for your baby.
- Consider the weather
If you’re having your baby during the rainy season or reside in cool regions, be sure to get long-sleeved onesies, sweaters, socks and mittens to protect your baby from the cold weather. For hot and humid weather, get light cotton onesies and sleeveless bodysuits. For cooler regions,
- Get essential everyday wear
One of the things I struggled with was the number of clothes to buy and I ended up buying a lot and of course, my baby outgrew most of them before he could even wear them. So, stick to the essentials that your baby needs. Approximately, get six to 10 pieces of Onesies and Bodysuits, get four to six pairs of shorts, trousers or skirts and get Sleepsuits, preferably the ones with zippers for more convenience.
- Buy gender-specific or gender-neutral colours
It is common knowledge that blue colour is ascribed to boys and pink to girls, but some parents prefer to clothe their babies in gender-neutral colours. And some parents prefer to be surprised on the day of delivery, while others prefer to know their baby’s gender in order to plan well ahead of their baby’s arrival. If you do not know your baby’s gender or you’re not the type to stick to gender-specific colours, you can explore clothes in colours like green, yellow, beige, taupe, white, grey, orange, purple, lavender or red.
- Plan for milestone outfits
When buying your baby’s clothes, you might want to shop for their first birthday outfit, naming ceremony outfit, or church dedication outfit, as the case may be.
- Consider second-hand
Considering the country's current economic condition and inflation rate, expectant parents can opt for thrift clothes for their babies. You could also explore hand-me-downs. Parents in the older generation usually keep their children’s clothes, and sometimes, these clothes are passed down. You could consider that option when building your baby’s wardrobe.
