A Nigerian man, David Adeolu Olawuyi, has shared his journey to achieving uninterrupted electricity by installing a solar power system, sparking discussions on the cost of energy independence in the country.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), David revealed that he spent N2.2 million on the project, which includes a 5kva Hybrid Inverter, a 5KVA Lithium-ion Battery, and a 3700-Watt Solar Panel. He made the disclosure while responding to a discussion about the cost of solar inverter setups in Nigeria.

Breaking down the costs, David wrote:

"5kva Hybrid Inverter - N520k. 5KVA Lithium-ion Battery - N1.250m. 3 700-Watt Panels - N360k. Installation and Wiring - N150k. All these were done within the last two months. Don’t let them whine you o."

His investment has sparked widespread reactions on social media. While some commenters considered the cost relatively affordable, others used the post to offer further insights into solar panel installations and energy solutions.

David's story highlights the growing interest in renewable energy in Nigeria as more people seek alternatives to the inconsistent national grid.

Netizens react to N2.2m spend on solar power

TheRadar compiled the following reactions from netizens.

@laoma_:

Most of this 700w panel being sold are in fact 550w panels. Most of this dealers replace the sticker at the back. The best way to know is to measure the cell waffer and cell counts usually 210mm and 156 respectively for 700w. Any less than that is fake.”

@Bright_Hart

“I feel maybe cheated I got a 3.5k hybrid inverter for 780k. Two unit of 220ahm battery for 370k each and 6 units of 330 watts panels for 140k each.”

@ogagalumen:

“Great price. But my issue is the connection. I am not seeing any protection for your system. The system is just one thunder or one bad voltage to destroy the inverter…”

@lightupRE:

“It’s understandable, you can get this prices from Alaba, but if you’re not careful they will definitely sell 2.5KWh Lithium for you as 5KWh and do the same with the inverter. The fact that you have someone to hold responsible is an advantage for you down the line.”

@AYOMITAN_1:

“People must understand that, there are brands that very highly quality and way expensive, you can’t compare felicity price with SRNE and you can’t compare SRNE with DEYE product price. Prices are not fixed just depend on brands.”

@eze_cibasieven:

“People are not looking at the power ratings. If you have a good system serving you, be happy with it. Most things they advertise as solar is not it.”

@AkanjiBambam_:

“Funny enough, this prices are still expensive, Dem whine you too sha.”

@preetyandweird_:

“Installation and wiring 150k? You’re a thief😂”

@busari_habib:

“This is good installation.”

EFCC blames frequent national grid collapses on corruption

Meanwhile, TheRadar previously reported that the EFCC chairman, Ola Olukoyede, attributed the frequent collapse of the national grid in the country to the corrupt practices of power sector contractors.

He explained this during the visit by members of the House of Representatives Committee on Financial Crimes to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja as part of an oversight function.
