The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency has cautioned residents to stay vigilant against fraudulent deals and unsafe products as the Easter season draws near.

In a statement shared on its X (formerly Twitter) page on Thursday, April 2, the agency’s General Manager, Afolabi Solebo, warned that the surge in commercial activities during festive periods often exposes consumers to exploitation.

“Consumers should be mindful of the increased commercial activities typically associated with the festive period, which often come with risks such as price inflation, sale of substandard, expired or hazardous products, and misleading promotional offers,” he said.

Solebo urged Lagosians to take proactive measures when making purchases, emphasizing the importance of verifying product quality and authenticity.

“It is important to check expiry dates, especially on food, beverages, and pharmaceuticals, avoid patronising unregistered or suspicious vendors, and always demand receipts with proper documentation for all transactions,” he added.

He also issued a stern warning to traders and service providers, cautioning them against taking advantage of consumers during the festive rush.

According to him, the agency will ramp up enforcement activities across the state.

“We will intensify monitoring and enforcement operations across markets, shopping centres and recreational venues during the Easter period,” Solebo said.

The agency further encouraged residents to report any suspicious or unethical practices, assuring swift action on complaints.

“Residents are encouraged to report any case of consumer rights violations or unscrupulous trade practices for prompt intervention through our official communication channels,” he stated.

Solebo also advised extra caution when engaging in online transactions, recommending that payments should only be made upon delivery and to vendors with verifiable physical locations.

Reaffirming the agency’s dedication to consumer protection, he said, “Consumers have fundamental rights, but they also have responsibilities, to be careful, informed, watchful and to speak up when necessary.”

He concluded by wishing residents a safe and enjoyable Easter celebration.
