Blind students recite re-introduced national anthem

Nigerians on social media were left in awe as students of Bathsheba Home and School for the Blind were seen in a video reciting the re-introduced national anthem.

You will recall that President Tinubu, on May 29, 2024, signed into law the bill on the reintroduction of the old national anthem.

On Monday, June 3, 2024, the students of Bathsheba Home and School for The Blind were seen in a video impeccably reciting stanzas of the re-introduced national anthem “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” which replaced the “Arise, O Compatriots” during their morning assembly.

The video which was widely circulated on X immediately caught the attention of the people; with the caption: “Monday motivation from our talented stars! Witness our remarkable students at Bathsheba School for The Blind singing the national anthem, filling your week with pride and joy.”

The new national anthem has been a major point of discussion for Nigerians. However, seeing blind students recite all the stanzas raised an uproar on various social media platforms.

Nigerians react to blind students reciting national anthem

An Instagram user @onealbo commented: “Very sad and depressing that their beloved country whom they passionately sing for will continue to fail them over and over again.”

Another IG user @symplyveeboy wrote: “Me wey get eyes sef never know am…”

On the other hand, an ‘X’ user @Kuponu J commented: “Dem no see the problem we dey face for this country.”

Another ‘X’ user @trueAFICIONADO commented: “If only they can see the Nigeria they are hailing.”

However, some commended the students for being able to recite every stanza of the re-introduced national anthem. An IG user @successmikky commended the blind students by commenting: “People with eyes cannot recite it completely, omo nawa for 9ja oo, why is it the physically challenged that makes 9ja proud. Naija I hail thee.”

Similarly, the pupils of Justice and Peace Primary School in Ogbere-Ijebu, Ogun State, were seen in a video reciting the three stanzas of the re-introduced national anthem in their morning assembly last week Friday.

Several schools and institutions have been making efforts to ensure their students are familiar with the re-introduced national anthem.

However, judging by the reactions to the videos circulated, many Nigerians remain nonchalant about memorising the re-introduced national anthem. To some, there are more crucial challenges facing the country than wasting time in their old age memorising it.
