  • It’s over 10 years since the release of the music video of 9ice’s Street Credibility
  • Music video director Clarence Peters has shared an experience that led to why the video was shot in the studio
  • Clarence also shared his experiences with ‘Area Boys’ as a music video director

Some 17 years after the iconic release of 9ice’s hit track Street Credibility, celebrated music director Clarence Peters has revealed the reasons behind the decision to film the video in a studio setting.

The song, which also featured legendary singer 2baba, was released in 2008. It is the third track off 9ice’s Gongo Aso album catalogue.

In a series of X (formerly Twitter) threads on February 10, Clarence went into the details to explain the story of how they ended up in the studio for the video shoot.

The music director noted that he got a death threat at the time because of his decision to shoot 9ice’s song in the studio.

Literally someone called me from Ibadan threatening to KILL Me because of this Video..How Dare I Shoot a Video for STREET CREDIBILITY in the studio.

At that time, We hadn't figured out how to shoot videos outside and not get beaten by area boys. Legit Challenge.” he tweeted.

Why Clarence Peters shot ‘Street Credibility’ inside studio

In another tweet, Clarence said that he was faced with the challenge of bringing two legends, 9ice and Tuface to a street location without safety.

According to the music director, 2Face had already escaped an armed robbery attack twice and it would be dangerous to put him in such a situation again.

Couldn't wrap my mind around the very thought of bringing two superstars like 9ice & 2 Face to a Street location.

Please, remember 2 face had been attacked by armed Robbers twice around this Era. These are things you can't explain to the audience before they insult your craft.” he said.

Sharing lessons he learnt from his experience, Clarence said it included finding out the Head of the Area boys and settling them, buying local drinks, getting Government Permit and carrying armed security.

I still have to tell the story of when area boys came out of nowhere and slapped an artiste while I was shooting. I had to wrap up immediately, not before getting into a face-off. Things got really crazy because we had armed security but the boys also brought weapons. Omo, e no easy.” he added.
