- Netizens shared mixed feelings about her explanations
Nollywood filmmaker Omoni Oboli recently addressed her fans, providing an insightful explanation for the removal of her latest film, A Different Type of Love, from her YouTube channel.
The actress explained the circumstances surrounding her decision and clarified confusion among her audience about the situation of the film.
In an Instagram post on January 11, Omoni pointed out how her new film flagged copyrights and originality standards based on reviews they got, which led to the hard decision to take it down.
“Dear besties, We know you're wondering why the latest movie isn't available anymore on the channel. We've received feedback that it bears a striking resemblance to another film on YouTube.
As a channel committed to originality, we've decided to remove the movie while we investigate the situation. We've engaged the scriptwriter to understand exactly what happened and are working closely with our legal team to resolve this. Thank you for your understanding and continued support. Always remember that I love you,” she wrote.
Meanwhile, a pinned comment from Susan Jimah TV on Omoni’s post alleged that the script was sold to her in 2022 by the same scriptwriter.
According to her, the title of the script was only tweaked. Susan Jimah also revealed that the same script was sold to another YouTube channel with a different title.
Netizens react to Omoni Oboli’s explanation
TheRadar curated some below:
@eke_fachi said, “This will be the second time Omoni Oboli will be involved in a copyright infringement mess (publicly anyway because we don’t know of others, if any that didn’t make it to social media) My counsel is that she needs to be wary of the people she works with especially for scripts,”
@Ekwere_EA wrote, “I just saw that Omoni took down a movie because it is very similar to another movie. People in the comments are saying that it was the exact script, even word for word, and I'm sorry, but this is a new low,”
@ChinonsoIhekire said, “so, she was allegedly sold a screenplay that’s been previously acquired by someone else. it’s her own movie being taken down. and she actually has integrity doing that pending investigation of the case. In other words, we’ve been wasting money on conferences to talk about IP in Africa’s creative industry, because it’s still very crazy over here,”
@the_quirky said, “The script writer needs to be questioned ooo,”
@mndiomu said, “We need to test our laws in court as they apply to the use of copyright, Intellectual Property and fraud.Because this shot isn't going to change anytime soon. Too many corrupt people hiding and "working" in Nollywood,”
@Patodinma said, “This alone should tell you that Nollywood is a joke,”
@esegboriah said, “They have all lost it. The YouTube producers have taken Nollywood back to the “Asaba years”..Omoni for instance, releases movies almost every Friday, like how are you making movies weekly?
They don’t have standards anymore, the storyline is so poor, you feel drained watching some,”
@Oloriduduola_24 said, “YouTube movies are something else, at least you will find 3 or more movies with the same story line, different titles, just a little tweak to the story. They are just doing it for the money, it's not entertaining again,”
