- Nigerians compared the two most popular Reggae stars, Lucky Dube and Bob Marley
- Although both Marley and Dube specialised in Reggae music, they hailed from different countries
- The argument took place on X as people picked sides and gave reasons for their choice
Nigerians took to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, July 8, to share their opinions on who was more successful, Lucky Dube or Bob Marley. Both music icons were globally recognised for their impact and evolution of Reggae music.
With about 22 albums to his credit, South African Lucky Dube is regarded as one of Africa's greatest reggae artists, known for his powerful lyrics and contribution to the genre.
Jamaican Bob Marley, though not as prolific as Dube in terms of discography, is considered by many to be the most influential reggae artist of all time, owing to his contributions to the genre and his promotion of peace and social justice.
What started the Dube vs Marley argument?
The argument over Dube and Marley started when a Nigerian identified as @The_Vyrus (Mighty Mohammed) made a post on X on Saturday, 6th of July, that, “I think I should just make a Bob Marley vs Lucky Dube Thread.”
The post sparked several reactions in the comment section, with a handful expressing their love for each artist based on their distinctiveness.
As a follow-up, Mohammed posted a compilation of Lucky Dube and Bob Marley’s songs side by side to fuel the fire of comparison.
Nigerians compare Lucky Dube and Bob Marley
In response to the comparison post on the music legends, a handful of Nigerians took to the comment section to clearly state who they preferred and their reasons. TheRadar compiled them below:
@MeetMrAustin said, “Lucky Dube is the best musician in music history as far as i am concerned. I don’t care what anybody has to say man. I connect to his music on a spiritual level. Almost more than I do with gospel.”
For @Chiburez, he still plays Lucky Dube non-stop. According to him, it hits hard while driving.
@Sapaphoic wrote, “Incredible thread. For me, Lucky Dube is the better songwriter and vocalist. But there’s a monotony to his sound. I struggled to distinguish most of his songs. Bob Marley has a more global appeal, probably due to his versatility. There is a clear distinctiveness in his songs.”
@Chuc_kki wrote, “Legendary, No winner, no loser. Just pure quality songs from pure genuine souls. Blessings to generations and the black race.”
@1djcally said, “I’ve always said it and known Bob Marley. Lucky Dube and I have been standing on business since way back ‘04. Bob Marley clear dieee malachi! Make I go disturb my neighbors right now with The Wailers.”
@Edisonokojie1 said, “Lucky Dube was not given the publicity and recognition he deserved…What! Going through this thread brought back memories and also showed how a brilliant singer and songwriter he was. May his soul rest in peace.”
