Being a celebrity in Nigeria comes with its perks but also its fair share of challenges. Recently, Nigerian artiste Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, popularly known as Spyro, took to Instagram to express his frustrations about the financial demands that come with being a public figure.
According to Spyro, he has been constantly bombarded with requests for financial assistance, which can be overwhelming, and he sometimes gets insulted when he cannot help people.
He shared on his Instagram page @Spyro___official that whenever he steps out, he's expected to shell out large sums of money—at least N100,000—to people. This, he calculated, would translate to around N15 million annually if he were to indulge in this daily.
This amount, he emphasised, is unsustainable for him, highlighting the immense financial pressure that celebrities face in Nigeria. He posted, “Really hard being a celebrity in this lagos I told a guy I don't have today and that I will see him next day and he rained insults on me”
The artiste's dilemma is a common one faced by many Nigerian celebrities. Spyro's honesty about his struggles has sparked a necessary conversation about the financial realities of being a celebrity in Nigeria.
He posted: “If I enter restaurant, BILLINGS go de wait me outside, I enter church, same thing... Enter estate same, carry phone enter online na same same EVERYBODY wants to take but nobody de give you and nobody thinks of how you are fairing S/O to everyone of my colleagues out there going through this, ya'll are the real MVP's and I CELEBRATE you.”
