  • Hijack ‘93 was recently released on Netflix on October 25 as a historical account of the true life 1993 Hijack incident in Nigeria
  • Robert Peters directed film features veteran and emerging faces like Nancy Isime, Sam Dede, Nnamdi Agbo and Oluwaseyi Akinsola
  • Since its release, Nigerians have expressed their disappointment and perceptions of its storytelling and delivery, TheRadar curated reviews.

If there's one thing Nigerians would not mince words about, it is reviews as they picked on the newly released Hijack ‘93 movie on Netflix.

Like birds, mixed reactions and reviews have been flying around, dissecting the storytelling and overall stance on the historically inspired Nollywood title.

Via a series of X (formerly Twitter) posts since its release on October 27 to November 4, netizens share their mixed perceptions, mostly heavy criticisms analysing what Hijack ‘93 missed in its storytelling and overall delivery.

Many opine that the film, in a bid to explore its creative license, lacks a proper story structure and delivers a disjointed attempt at a historical account. For some, Hijack ‘93 shined with its actors, who, despite their new faces, embodied the roles and held the emotional string needed for the film.

Netizens share criticisms of Nollywood Hijack ‘93 on Netflix

TheRadar curated some comments below:

@fosac_art wrote, “I've never publicly criticised a Nigerian movie before, but 'Hijack 93' on Netflix left me disappointed. Why wouldn't they focus on the election annulment and the hijackers' demands? They abandoned the main storyline to focus on a stupid fictional plot.”

@VibesSamzy said, “I’m sorry but this #hijack93 movie isn’t Netflix worthy. How was this cleared? The cinematography isn’t exactly good.”

@theugonna_ said, “Clearly I wasn’t traumatized enough by Beauty in Black for me to go and start Hijack 93. This is even worse.”

@myk_da_preacher commented, “I've watched 1hr 03 minutes of the movie, Hijack93 and all I can say is that the story was poorly acted. Give Hollywood the same story and you'd get a cinema best seller. They did their best according to their capacity but didn't do justice to the story!”

@_AdeyefaPeter said, “Ngl Hijack’93 movie on Netflix lacks storytelling , so sorry to say this but the movie isn’t giving for me … no details at all I believe the story I read is far different from what they portrayed in the movie.”

@ejykmykel1 said, “These lines from the movie Hijack 93 have got me thinking so much since last night. "It will take evil to defeat a greater evil."

@I_Zebs said, “I’m usually lenient to Nigerian movies, but you see that Hijack 93, Charles Okpaleke deserves to be pelted with rotten tomatoes.”

@Debbielyr said, “Finally watching Hijack 93 and I'm gobsmacked at how underwhelming it is.”

@Chefkobs said, “Watching Hijack 93 and its failed attempt to copy IC 814: The kandahar Hijack is appalling. This has to be the worst storyline ever!!! Where was the dialogue with the government, a plane was hijacked. What was that military negotiation with Bob? Why was this rushed? Why can't.”

@na_iimaah wrote, “Hijack ‘93. Not a bad watch.”

@lhurcarsirnau said, “Hijack 93 is just the typical story of the current day, Nigeria. No one or group to fight the government.”

Movie Review: ‘The Weekend’ explores a tactful thriller storytelling missing in Nollywood
