- Banky W says he is the one who cooks at home, not his wife, Adesua Etomi-Wellington
- Banky W said their arrangement may make some people uncomfortable, but it works for their marriage
- He urged couples to focus on what works for them instead of living by societal expectations
Singer and pastor Banky W has opened up about the domestic arrangement in his home, revealing that he is the one who does the cooking, not his wife, actress Adesua Etomi-Wellington.
Speaking on the Teju Baby Face Show, Banky W addressed reactions to a viral video that showed him preparing sausages, eggs and bacon, a clip that stirred conversation online about traditional gender roles in marriage.
Responding to the reactions, the singer made it clear that the arrangement in his home is intentional and works perfectly for both of them.
“There are some men, my wife must cook for me. My wife does not really cook, which she can cook very well, but it’s not her thing,” he said.
Banky W explained that rather than seeing the arrangement as unusual, he considers it a natural dynamic in their marriage.
“See the way God works, right? I enjoy cooking and I love eating and she loves eating. And it just means that if you come to our house, there are some people that will come and see me cooking and they’ll be like, ah, what’s going on. It will make some people uncomfortable but it works for us.
“And I think that’s the thing that people in marriage need to understand, is like what works for you will be different from somebody else. So don’t live your life by somebody else’s expectations or rules,” he said.
He said their arrangement reflects the reality of their relationship and should not be judged through the lens of societal expectations.
Banky W also said his perspective on service in marriage became even deeper after witnessing all his wife endured during their journey to parenthood.
According to him, Adesua went through years of physically and emotionally demanding fertility treatments while they tried to have their son, Hezekiah.
“In our journey to having children, I’ve seen her endure things that would break people. I’ve seen her when we were trying to have Hezekiah and we were going through IVF cycle after IVF cycle and it wasn’t working and she would get back on her feet and inject herself with whatever they said. I’ve seen her put herself through. So is it now that I now say cooking is hard?” he said.
Banky W said watching his wife’s strength during that period changed the way he viewed acts of service in marriage, making support feel natural rather than obligatory.
“It’s easy to give those acts of service when you have a wife like this,” he said.
His comments have since added to ongoing conversations around marriage, gender roles and the importance of couples building relationships around what works best for them, rather than public expectations.
