- Fans have called out Afrobeats singer Burna Boy over nationwide protest
- Most of them suggest he is hypocritical with his pro-freedom and African songs
- Burna Boy in a video, explains why he has chosen not to get involved
Nigerian Afrobeats singer Damini Ogulu, Burna Boy has been called out by fans for not lending his voice to the ongoing #EndBadGovernanace protest in the country.
Burna Boy in a video cleared the air following criticisms suggesting that he was hypocritical with the activism messages in his songs.
In the 4-minute Instagram live video posted on X (formerly Twitter) on August 1, the 33-year-old singer noted that he never mentioned that he was an activist to anyone.
“I never told anyone I'm an activist, bro. I don’t even know where you all got that shit from. I'm just a nigga that sees this shit and is heartbroken by it. I'm heartbroken by how helpless the situation is. I can not do it alone.
"I've studied my heroes and one thing they all have in common is that they all died before they died. Let me start with Fela because you all know him. From what I studied and conversations I've had, Fela didn't die when they saw his dead body. Fela died the day the Army stormed his house and threw his mom out of the window.
"He saw a crowd of people who he thought were his people yet he watched them move to a safe place and watch the shit happen. I feel like that killed him and broke his heart more than anything. This is the part of my heroes I don't want to be.”
He further explained that these are the reasons he is always torn between fighting for people and not caring at all. According to him, no politician has ever given him anything, and he stopped fighting after the EndSars protest.
How the Burna Boy dragging started
The criticism of the self-acclaimed African Giant started with an X user identified as @GidiGambino, who called the singer out for keeping quiet at a crucial time when the protest was ongoing.
He alleged that Burna Boy would suddenly use the death of protesters as a song after the government thugs had hijacked it.
His caption read: "Burnaboy won’t say anything now. He’s waiting for thugs and government-sponsored police to unalive Nigerians, so he’ll enter the studio and sing “Dem killi killi my people.”
