For the first time, Nollywood actress and producer Ufuoma McDermott has publicly opened up about a 12-year-long battle with chronic kidney disease.

The said disease was also revealed to have been the cause of death for her young brother, who died some years back.

In a recent interview session with popular media personality Chude Jideonwo on Friday, November 1, Ufuoma disclosed her battle with kidney disease and how it became life-threatening in 2023.

My weight, people don't understand. When I say I can't afford to put on weight, I don't wanna die. I have little children. Last year was a very trying time in my life where I thought I was going to die. I have battled chronic kidney disease for years, you know. About 12 years now.” Ufuoma shared in the short video snippet posted on Chude’s page.

How Ufuoma’s battle with kidney disease began

Meanwhile, Chude’s caption alongside the snippet video revealed that Ufuoma was diagnosed with a stage 3 kidney disease and that when she was told to slow down at work, she negotiated with her doctors.

That delay turned out to be costly. She was shortly diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease. Stage 4 and that’s the final stage. She says it was as a result of drug abuse, injecting too many painkillers. Thus began the battle for life.” the caption added.

According to Chude, Ufuoma, for six months, couldn't afford to make a mistake with her health at stage 4 of the kidney disease. Any error would be grievous, so she couldn't add weight.

She actually thought the end had come. In this exclusive interview, she shares how she found her way back from stage 4 kidney disease and how it changed how she lived her life.”
