- Timaya revealed during an interview that he battled with a drug addiction in 2020
- He disclosed that he lost weight and the addiction messed him up
- Nigerians react to the video, some believe he is still on drugs
In an old video that resurfaced on social media recently, Nigerian singer and songwriter Inetimi Alfred Odon, popularly known as Timaya, revealed that he had a drug addiction that almost ruined his life.
He said this during a radio interview with Beat FM in February 2024. He disclosed that he is not a saint and has suffered from a molly addiction during the coronavirus era in 2020.
The dancehall star also mentioned that he spent a lot of money on the addiction, which also made him lose a lot of weight.
He said: “I have done drugs, it was hell. It was a tough fight. It was COVID, 2020, everybody was home. I just went to see some young guys, it is always these young guys. I went to their house, and everybody was so happy. How are you guys so much happier than me? I’m the boss, I got money. And I am looking at them like, what are you guys on? I thought it was just about weed, and they told me they had molly.
“When I took it, I didn’t understand myself. I was happy. I dashed all the money in my pocket, so I wanted to just keep feeling like that. That was how I lost a lot of weight. I was not eating, I was just happy. How will you just want to be happy? You’re supposed to be happy naturally as a person, but when you now need a substance to make you happy, it replaces your original self. So, you have to be buying happiness. When I say I was taking molly, I was taking three pills every day and it felt like a medication. It was messing me up.”
Nigerians react to Timaya’s molly addiction
Some netizens disputed Timaya’s claim of being happy after taking molly, they said it was ice and not molly that he took. Others believe that he is not over the addiction, as he looks happy in the video.
Some Nigerians commended the singer on his oratory skills, saying they hadn’t heard him speak before.
