Nollywood actress and former Big Brother Naija star Bamike Olawunmi known as ‘BamBam’ has shared a harrowing account of her first childbirth experience.
The actress, who was recently praised for her performance in Omoni Oboli’s Love In Every Word, narrated her experience with gratitude.
Speaking in a recent episode of the Me and My Girls podcast, on March 16, Bambam revealed how she nearly suffered a stillbirth due to complications during her first delivery.
According to the reality star, who welcomed her first child with Teddy A in 2020, she was rushed into emergency surgery, during which her organs began to fail.
BamBam disclosed how her child had detached from the placenta, making every second count for her at the time.
The reality star also confessed that surviving the traumatic experience left her plagued by “what ifs” and feelings of gratitude for her child’s life.
How BamBam almost had stillbirth during delivery
“The moment they prepared me for surgery and they brought out my daughter, she had detached from the placenta. If I was a second late, she would have lost oxygen and I would have had a stillbirth.
“I was grateful for the baby and all but every time I look at her, I just say what if? The what ifs tormented me. They tormented me so much. I will look at her and I will just… even just remember I am getting so nervous.
“What if the doctor was not attentive? What if the nurse did not do her due diligence? The what ifs were so many. So a lot of stillbirths are due to negligence. It is either the doctor was not sound, or the nurse did not do her job on time or they arrived at the hospital late.
“I was just thinking and it haunted me for a while. I had to get therapy to walk me through being grateful. That’s how about all the thank Gods. Thank God that I got there on time, that we thought about the other car, that the doctor was sound, that the nurse did her job, the baby came out in one piece.
“Thank God the hospital had all their equipment working and there was light 24/7 because my kidney failed, my heart was weak, my liver…everything was just shutting down because of childbirth. Women should be worshipped,” BamBam narrated.
She further emphasised the importance of medical personnel’s diligence, citing negligence as a leading cause of stillbirths among pregnant women.
