Nollywood actress Lilian Afegbai has sparked online conversations after revealing an encounter with a friend who expected her to pay a staggering $1,200 for asoebi.
Taking to social media on Wednesday, March 26, Afegbai recounted how her friend, a soon-to-be bride, reached out via Snapchat to share wedding details, including the asoebi list. Initially, she assumed the cost was a modest ₦1,200, only to be stunned when she realized it was $1,200.
Expressing her disbelief, Afegbai questioned the growing trend of extravagant asoebi pricing. She humorously lamented the pressure such demands put on friends, especially those who may not be able to afford it.
“Una don dey sell asoebi for dollars for this Lagos? In Lagos? Make Una relax, you people are doing the most. I was on my own, when a very successful woman messaged me on Snap, and sent me an invite for her wedding. I expressed my happiness towards her wedding because I believe it will be my turn soon.
“I then checked the list to make arrangements in my schedule, so I saw 1200 for asoebi, thinking the woman was kind and generous, only for me to realise it was $1200.
“I was shocked. You people are not taking it easy on Baddies.
$1200 for asoebi I will only wear once, $1200 for your happiness, your I do, no.”
Afegbai’s post quickly went viral, drawing mixed reactions from netizens. While some found the situation amusing, others expressed shock at the audacity of the demand.
Many praised the actress for speaking out against the growing asoebi culture, which often places a financial strain on wedding guests. Others shared similar experiences of being asked to pay exorbitant sums for asoebi, calling for a shift towards more reasonable pricing.
