- Uche Maduagwu criticises Veekee James for mocking women with high relationship standards
- Veekee James' video sparked controversy over marriage expectations and individuality
- Netizens weigh in on the debate, highlighting the complexities of relationship standards irrespective of Veekee James-Atere's portrayal
Nollywood actor Uche Maduagwu recently criticised celebrity fashion designer Veekee James Atere for a social media post directed at women with high relationship standards.
On Sunday, January 12, 2025, Veekee shared a video showing moments of affection with her husband and captioned it with a message that suggested women could have similar relationships if they were less picky about their partners.
She specifically mentioned traits like wanting a man to be tall, handsome, financially responsible, and have a good sense of style.
Her caption read: “Queen of standards, dey play. This could be you and somebody’s son, but you like your man tall and handsome with the perfect set of teeth, 100% financial responsibility. Impeccable dress sense, very spiritual yet with a touch of boyness. Heyaaa!”
Maduagwu responded, urging Veekee to reconsider her stance, emphasising that marriage is not one-size-fits-all. He argued that different women have different needs and preferences in a partner and criticised Veekee's approach for making it seem like marriage is a commodity to be purchased.
Maduagwu pointed out that while some women may prioritise financial stability, others might not mind if their partner earns less.
He stated, "Honestly, I thought 2025, Veekee, you would have changed your character spiritually. Let me tell you this: marriage is not a designer dress. You stated, ' Some women, this could be you with someone else’s son’.
“Excuse me, what fits you in a man is different from what fits other women. Stop all this advice; nobody needs it. Most women in Nigeria like their men to be 100 per cent financially responsible.
“Some women are not bothered with the fact that they have more money than their husbands, what fits you is what fits you, and what fits other women is what fits them, stop making it look like marriage is a designer that you are comfortable with making your husband a public ridicule for content is not what other women would want. So stop this.”
The conversation sparked varied responses from netizens, with some supporting Veekee’s right to set standards while others echoed Maduagwu’s sentiments about individuality in relationship choices.
Many sharp comments condemned the notion that wishing for certain attributes in a partner was wrong, warning against promoting unrealistic standards and encouraging women to marry solely for financial gain.

@_bride commented: “She's indirectly saying her husband isn't a perfect husband choice.
Alright, we all know his flaws & shortcoming thanks to you”
@iam_gabriellle commented: “Some of you in the comments lack comprehension and sense. She is listing out things that most people, women specifically must see in a man before they can marry him, She's just saying that some things matter and some things don't really matter. She isn't listing what she's lacking coz last I checked, her husband is tall and handsome, Please receive sense! “
