From the “Awwnnns,” to “Am I a potato?” and “God Whens,” gangs, Valentine’s Day never fails to engulf the atmosphere with its buzz and love stories.

As Ed Sheeran sang, “When it gets hard, you know it can get hard sometimes. It is the only thing that makes us feel alive,”

Love is definitely not a bed of roses where every girl always meets her prince charming or a guy gets the girl of his dreams.

From the mundane to the heartwarming and funny stories, we asked six Nigerians to share their Valentine's Day experiences and Here's what they said.

6 Nigerians share bittersweet Valentine experiences

  • Akinrinade Funminiyi, 30

Three years ago, I ordered a Valentine’s package from a bookstore in Lagos. After receiving the package, I travelled to give it to my GF. Sadly, upon alighting, I forgot the package in the car. Before I realised, the car was gone. It was quite a sad experience.

  • Maryjane Ezenwa, 31

My worst experience on Valentine’s Day was the time I spent it completely alone at home—no messages, no calls from friends, family, or even my spouse. It was a stark reminder of how isolating that day can feel when everyone else seems to be caught up in the celebration.

  • Precious Adewole, 28

I never had any good or bad experience on Valentine’s Day. I never collected gifts from anyone. The only person who makes my Valentine's Day is my mum. She always calls me to tell me how valuable I am and how much she cherishes me.

  • Elvis Uzorka, 34

I don’t have any special Valentine’s memories. Sometimes, five or six years back, I was given an LED flower (rubber flowers with an LED light in the base), and it was casually given, like, “Here, I bought you this.” I remember tearing it apart after we broke up.

Secondly, while in secondary school, we (the boys) used to buy flowers for each other for fun and help those writing love letters to their crushes by proofreading their letters.

  • Ezekiel Abayomi, 28

I’ve never had a best or worst Valentine’s Day experience, Valentine is like every other day to me. No event/activity to make it different from the day before.

  • Terrence Warebebe, 30

Well. I can’t even say I’ve been unlucky to always be out of relationships around that period. The only one I had was an (Long Distance Relationship) LDR. I can’t even remember how it went cause we were still in a tertiary institution, and far apart.

This is like my first time having a partner on Valentine’s Day in years. My Babe is travelling tonight for official duties. We were supposed to have dinner at mine. I had to send her a valentine package two days ago since I was sure I wouldn’t be able to get her today.
