Whether it is for relaxation or to satisfy a curiosity, movies almost never fail to play their role. In the light of keeping the movie momentum alive, TheRadar curated the five most anticipated Nollywood titles to look out for in July.

5 Nollywood movies to watch out for in July

1. The Beads (July 12th)

This star-studded psychological thriller promises to be the first Nollywood ‘Happy Death Day’ kind of film. It showcases faces such as Zainab Balogun, Efa Iwara, Shaffy Bello, Adedimeji Lateef, Segun Arinze, Idowu Phillips, among other popular acts.

Produced by Akinbayo Morakinyo and directed by Moyinoluwa Ezekiel, it follows a high concept story of a bride who finds herself trapped in a time loop on her wedding day.

The loop always ends in her death. She discovers her ordeal is from a cursed bead she was gifted. How does she uncover the mystery and break the cycle? The Beads will be showing exclusively on Prime Video on 12th July.

2. The Man Died - (July 14th)

Period films and biopics are great ways to document history, and The Man Died is one such film to see in July.

The movie, directed by Awam Amkpa and produced under the Zik Zulu film, is an adaptation of Noble Laureate Wole Soyinka's acclaimed memoir, The Man Died.  The plot explores the author’s reflections and perspectives during the Nigerian Civil War.

Significantly, the date of release, July 14th, collides with Soyinka’s 90th birthday anniversary.

The movie, which also highlights Soyinka’s historical context, features Sam Dede, Wale Ojo, and Nobert Young, among others as casts.

3. Wrong Number (July 19th)

Sliding into the number three, Wrong Number is one to watch in July. Think of a man who is abducted by a gang due to a case of mistaken identity, all tied to a wrong number. How interesting does that sound?

The thriller, directed by Uche Chukwu and co-produced by Lanre Lawal, promises a suspenseful, cinematic experience with unexpected twists.

With casts such as Nancy Isime, Seun Ajayi, Remilekin Khalid Safaru (Reminisce), Shaffy Bello, and Bimbo Manuel, one wouldn’t be wrong to place a high expectation on the film. It is set to hit the cinemas on July 19th.

4. Onyegwu - (July 19th)

We don’t get this often, but inspirational sports drama in Nollywood is unique to start with. Struck by unforeseen circumstances, Alex, a football star, has his career halted. He experiences waning hope and encounters a rising footballer who reignites his passion for sport again. The two players’ worlds intertwine as they embark on their individual journeys.

Onyegwu is a story of hope, resilience, passion and the unwavering spirit of athletes. It is directed by Jerome Weber and Uche Jombo. Written by Victor Alabi, Uche Jombo and Stephen Oluboyo, it is a film to look forward to.

The film stars Toyin Abraham, Lateef Adedimeji, Natacha Akide, Chioma Chukwuka,Ini Edo, Eric Emeka, Lilian Adesoro, Nancy Isime, Uche Jombo, Zubby Micheal, Broda Shaggi amongst others. It will premiere on Prime Video.

5. House of Ga’a - (July 26th)

This is yet another biopic by Bolanle Austen-Peters, who has proven her dexterity in this genre with the success of Funmilayo Ransom Kuti.

House of Ga’a is an action drama that captures the life of Bashorun Ga’a, a prime minister and kingmaker in Yoruba history during the 18th century. Ga’a was prominent for his mastery of ‘juju’ which allowed him to wield immense powers that surpassed the kings he served.

This powerful biopic highlights Ga’a’s peak as a powerful prime minister and his eventual fall. It showcases his complexities as a person and the unstable political terrain during his era.

It is safe to say that Bolanle Austen-Peters has never disappointed in her biopics. So, House of Ga’a is much anticipated. Featuring Funke Akindele, Yemi Blaq, Stan Nze, Seun Akindele, Toyin Abraham, Ibrahim Chatta, Mike Folarin, Femi Branch and Gbenga Titiloye, it will be showing exclusively on Netflix starting from July 26th.
