Telecommunications giant, MTN Nigeria, has disclosed plans to establish its new headquarters in Eko Atlantic City, Lagos, becoming the first telecom company to build in the rapidly expanding coastal city.

MTN Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer, Karl Toriola, stated this during the launch of MyLagosApp, a digital platform designed to streamline access to essential city services for residents, on Thursday, March 13.

Toriola restated the telecom company’s commitment to long-term investment in Lagos beyond connectivity, which necessitated the acquisition of land in the coastal city.

He, however, did not reveal a timeline or financial implications of the project.

“Beyond connectivity, we are committed to making long-term investments in Lagos.
“As part of this commitment, we have acquired a piece of land in Eko Atlantic City, and we will commence construction once we have gotten the equipment,” he said.

The plan to situate its headquarters in Eko Atlantic City comes four years after MTN Nigeria first announced that it would build a new head office.

MTN joins the likes of FirstBank, TVC, Shell, others, in Eko Atlantic

The plan to relocate its headquarters to Eko Atlantic city means MTN Nigeria will join major corporations like First Bank, Shell, TVC, Dangote Group, and the United States Embassy, which are among a growing list of companies relocating to the 10-square-kilometre development.

Recall that on March 5, FirstBank of Nigeria Limited held the groundbreaking ceremony for its new green-certified Head Office Building in Eko Atlantic City, Lagos.

The bank disclosed that upon completion, the 40-storey building project would become the tallest building in Nigeria.

It added that the project will be an engineering and environmental delight due to its technologically advanced, eco-friendly and sophisticated construction, which would set a new standard for the financial services sector in Africa.

Eko Atlantic becoming Lagos’ most advanced commercial hub

Eko Atlantic City, an urban development built on 10 million square metres of reclaimed land off the Lagos coast, is designed as a self-sustaining metropolis.

The city was launched in 2008, the same year the land reclamation started.

It is located beside Victoria Island, which is Lagos’ main business district, and aims to become the city’s most advanced commercial hub.

The attractive features of the coastal city are its modern infrastructure, strategic location, and well-planned business environment.

MTN Nigeria to build tier-4 data centre in Lagos

The telecom giant also stated that it is constructing West Africa’s largest tier 4 data centre in Lagos.

It said the facility will house 1,500 racks and operate as a carrier-neutral hub, allowing multiple Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and cloud service providers to interconnect.

Toriola confirmed that the data centre will not be situated within Eko Atlantic but on the Lagos mainland, per TechCabal

“With seven degrees of connectivity, this facility will be the most sophisticated data hub in the region, further strengthening Nigeria’s position as a leader in digital transformation,” Toriola said.

MTN pays over N200bn in VAT monthly – Tax committee

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, revealed that MTN Nigeria is the largest contributor to the nation’s Value Added Tax (VAT) pool, paying over N200 billion every month.

This makes the telecommunications giant the single biggest contributor to the country’s VAT revenue, with a significant gap between it and the second-largest contributor.
