Rúben Amorim, the newly appointed head coach of Manchester United, has made it clear that his primary objective is to restore the club’s identity amidst a turbulent season.

In his first interview, released on Friday, November 15, since taking over at Old Trafford, the 39-year-old emphasised the urgent need to strike a balance between patience and immediate results as United battles to climb from a disappointing 13th place in the Premier League standings.

Speaking candidly, Amorim acknowledged the challenge ahead but stressed that building an identity will be the cornerstone of his tenure,

“We know that we need time, but we have to win time, to win time is to win games. But the most important thing for me is identity. From day one, we will start with our identity.”

The Portuguese tactician stated the importance of instilling a recognisable game model, focusing on details such as pressing and positioning without overwhelming the players,

“You cannot go 100 per cent on every detail because it will be confusing for the players. My first goal is identity,” Amorim reiterated, emphasising the long-term vision he hopes to instil in the team.

Despite the daunting task ahead, Amorim played down his individual role, describing himself as a “small part” of the club’s resurgence,

“I know the head coach has the engine of the club in their hands, but I don’t want to be just in charge. I want to be part of something bigger. It will be more fun and so much easier to reach the goals,” he explained.

During his first week in charge, Amorim was introduced to Manchester United’s training complex and key officials, including Chief Executive Omar Berrada, Sporting Director Dan Ashworth, and Technical Director Jason Wilcox. He also met with players who were not on international duty.

Amorim reflected on United’s legacy, declaring,

“If you ask me, Manchester United is the biggest club in England. It’s part of the history, but we have to address that and show it again by winning.”

Honoured by the opportunity, Amorim concluded,

“This was my only choice because of how big this club is. I will do everything for the team.”

The road to restoring United’s glory days may be steep, but Amorim’s vision of unity and identity could be the spark the Red Devils need.
