Former Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney has tipped Manchester City to narrowly defeat Arsenal in what he described as a decisive Premier League encounter next weekend.

The fixture, set to take place at the Etihad Stadium, comes at a critical stage of the title race. Arsenal, who are chasing their first league crown since 2004, recently suffered a setback after a 2-1 home defeat to Bournemouth. The result marked their third loss in four matches across all competitions, raising concerns about their recent form.

Mikel Arteta’s side had also been eliminated from the FA Cup by Championship club Southampton and lost the Carabao Cup final to Manchester City, compounding a difficult run of results. Despite still sitting at the top of the table, their lead has been significantly reduced.

Meanwhile, Manchester City strengthened their position with a commanding 3-0 win over Chelsea, closing the gap to just six points while also holding a game in hand. The upcoming clash between the two sides is now widely viewed as a pivotal moment in the title race.

Speaking on his BBC podcast, Rooney described the match as a “title decider,” suggesting that the outcome could heavily influence where the Premier League trophy ends up this season. He explained that a win for City would make them strong favourites, while an Arsenal victory would put the Gunners in a commanding position.

Rooney predicted a tight contest, backing City to secure a 1-0 win at home. He added that although such a result would not mathematically confirm the title race, it would give Pep Guardiola’s side a significant advantage in the final stretch of the season.

The former striker also reflected on Arsenal’s recent struggles, suggesting that pressure and lack of title-winning experience among some players may be affecting their performances at a crucial stage of the campaign.

Arsenal, however, have shown resilience in Europe, securing a 1-0 victory over Sporting CP in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie. Nonetheless, domestic inconsistency remains a concern as they head into one of the most important fixtures of their season.

With momentum shifting and expectations rising, next weekend’s encounter between Manchester City and Arsenal is shaping up to be one of the defining matches of the Premier League campaign.
