  • Victor Boniface scored two goals and assisted another in Bayer Leverkusen's 4-1 win over Hoffenheim
  • The forward said after the match that he didn’t want to provoke anyone with the celebration
  • This was Boniface’s first multi-goal game since returning from surgery last year

Bayer Leverkusen star Victor Boniface played a crucial role in his team’s early dominance, assisting Martin Terrier’s opening goal before finding the back of the net himself to inspire his team to a 4-1 victory.

After scoring the first goal, Boniface surprised fans and viewers by pulling his shorts down in celebration, a moment that quickly went viral.

Following the game, the striker Victor Boniface explained why he pulled down his pants and danced after scoring a brace in his side’s 4-1 win over Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga on Saturday, September 14.

The Nigerian doubled Bayer Leverkusen’s advantage in the 30th minute and dropped his pants to expose his white shorts on the touchline.

The 23-year-old then started dancing before his teammates joined in the celebration. After the celebration, Boniface then pulled his pants back up.

Speaking about the strange celebration after the match, Boniface said he was inspired by a TikTok trend popularised by a Nigerian influencer.

“I don’t want to provoke anyone with it. I only did it in front of our own fans,” Boniface told Sky Germany via WELT after the match.

“It’s a TikTok trend from a Nigerian influencer, and he’s a big influencer. He choreographed the dance and asked me if I could do it. I told him: no problem. I would have done it in the first two games, but I hadn’t scored a goal yet. And when I did score, it was time to keep my promise.”

For the first time since he returned from major surgery in late 2023, the 23-year-old recorded a multi-goal match for his German club team.

Boniface bagged a brace and made an assist in Bayer 04 Leverkusen's 4-1 win over Hoffenheim. Given how many chances he had, the forward could have scored four or more.

Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka made a special point to emphasise how many tallies Boniface could have netted, praising his team-mate intentionally sarcastic manner when during his post-match interview.

“We know how important he is to us, you can see that he's back, hungry, holding the balls up and getting into a rhythm. He's still young. He knows what he did well today, but overall he has to score four goals. Then we'll be a bit happier,” Xhaka stated.

Few days after announcing N2m giveaway for fans, Boniface gets fined N44m

Previously, TheRadar reported that Super Eagles and Bayer Leverkusen striker, Victor Boniface, had been hit with a one-match suspension and a $25,000 fine following an incident of unsportsmanlike conduct during last week’s Super Cup match against VfB Stuttgart. The German Football Association (DFB) decided after Boniface was accused of making an obscene gesture toward Stuttgart players in the post-match celebrations.

The timing of the suspension comes just four days after Boniface announced plans for a social media giveaway for his fans on X app, formerly Twitter.
