- Moses Simon scores his first goal of the season as Nantes beats Auxerre 2-0
- Simon returned to action after a season-ending injury sustained in March
- Bahereba Guirassy scored a second goal for Nantes in stoppage time
Super Eagles winger, Moses Simon, made a triumphant return to the pitch, helping Nantes to a 2-0 victory over Auxerre in the French Ligue 1 on Sunday.
Simon, who has recently recovered from a season-ending injury sustained in March during an international friendly against Mali, marked his comeback with a stunning goal in the 14th minute.
The 29-year-old Nigerian international wasted no time in re-establishing himself as a crucial figure for Antoine Kombouaré’s side.
His first goal of the season came courtesy of a brilliant assist from Spanish midfielder Pedro Chirivella.
Simon curled a beautiful shot into the net, giving Nantes an early lead. His performance was a clear indication that he had fully shaken off the injury that kept him sidelined for several months.
Nantes dominated the first half, with Simon constantly threatening Auxerre’s defence with his agility and skill.
Despite their efforts, Nantes couldn't extend their lead before the break. Auxerre’s hopes of a comeback were dealt a significant blow in the 53rd minute when their Japanese striker, Ado Onaiwu, who has Nigerian heritage, was shown a red card, reducing the visitors to 10 men.
Simon’s influence on the game was evident, as he recorded 42 touches, created two chances, and had two shots on target. His passing was also impressive, completing 16 of 22 attempts, including three out of four long-range passes.
The fans at the Stade de la Beaujoire showed their appreciation for his performance, giving him a standing ovation when he was substituted in the 78th minute.
Nantes sealed the victory deep into stoppage time when Bahereba Guirassy found the back of the net, ensuring their first win of the season.
The match also saw Super Eagles prospect Gabriel Osho starting in defence for Auxerre, a team that recently earned promotion to Ligue 1.
Simon’s return to form is not only a boost for Nantes but also for Nigerian football fans, as he is expected to feature in the Super Eagles’ upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers next month.
