- Michael Olise made an immediate impact, scoring just 12 minutes into his Bayern Munich debut
- Former Crystal Palace forward Clinton Morrison believes Bayern Munich got a bargain in signing Olise who is of Nigerian descent
- Bayern Munich fans are already buzzing with excitement for what the 2024/25 season holds after Olise’s strong debut
Michael Olise's move from Crystal Palace to Bayern Munich was one of the most talked-about transfers of the summer, and it didn’t take long for the 22-year-old to make his mark.
Just 12 minutes into his first start for the German giants, Olise found the back of the net in a friendly against Swiss side Grasshopper Club Zurich, showcasing the talent that former Crystal Palace forward Clinton Morrison believes will shine brightly in Munich.
“There’s not many who can replace Michael Olise. I think he’s a fantastic player. I would have loved to see him stay in the Premier League, but Bayern Munich has got a snip there. I was speaking to the chairman the other day, and I was saying I couldn’t believe how cheap he’s gone with the transfer fee.
“I know Olise is going to be a superstar, watching him at the Olympics at the moment he’s been fantastic for France with the goals and assists he’s producing. He’s just an outstanding footballer, so Palace will miss him,” Morrison said in an interview with Betway.
The confidence in Olise’s ability is evident, with Morrison stating,
“One million per cent, the guy is full of confidence. The club asked me to hand out awards at the end of the season, and he’s just so laid back, as you see on the pitch. He plays with freedom, as long as they let him produce what he can do and Vincent Kompany looks after him, then I think they’ve got a real player there.”
Arriving late to pre-season due to his involvement at the Paris Olympics, Olise wasted no time settling in, with his debut goal in a 4-0 victory showing just why Bayern Munich made him a priority signing.
The friendly match was an opportunity for the Bavarians to get valuable minutes into the legs of players who had been busy with international duties over the summer.
The lineup included other stars like Harry Kane, who also got on the scoresheet, and Mathys Tel, who continues to impress with each performance.
In the second half, Bayern made several changes, with Thomas Müller, Sacha Boey, and Joshua Kimmich among the substitutes who came on.
Müller continued his fine form, scoring Bayern’s fourth goal in stoppage time after a slick pass from Raphaël Guerreiro.
While the match may have been a friendly, the performances of Olise, Kane, and Tel have certainly given Bayern Munich fans plenty to look forward to in the upcoming 2024/25 season.
Olise was born in England, his father being Nigerian, while his mother has Algerian and French roots, the new Bayern Munich recruit is eligible to play either for France, England, Nigeria, and Algeria.
According to an interview OGN conducted with a source close to Olise, he wanted to wait till the next World Cup (which was in 2022) to see if he could get a call-up from France. If he is not invited, OGN reported that he would rather play for Nigeria than any other country.
“Olise has a certain attachment to the Nigerian team and that is why he accepted a call-up two years ago,” the source told OGN.
“He didn’t honour it due to issues and also the sack of the coach, but he still has Nigeria in mind if he does not make it with the French team. His talks to turn down an invitation from Algeria has led to talks of them shaming him that he can’t into the Nigerian team.”
“However, I tell you, if Nigeria comes calling at the right time, he will jump on it.”
It is now left for the youngster to choose where the country he wishes to play for.
