William Troost-Ekong, the captain of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, has added another feather to his cap, receiving the highly esteemed African Nations Football Awards (ANFA) Special Award in Cairo, Egypt, on Sunday, November 10. His important role in the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) not only had a positive impact on Nigeria’s defence but also secured him a spot among Africa’s elite footballers.
Troost-Ekong’s contribution during AFCON cannot be overemphasised, leading the Nigerian team to a well-fought second-place finish and proving himself as a defensive pillar. His incredible performance included three goals, one of which he scored in the final game against Ivory Coast, taking his total AFCON tally to five. With four clean sheets to his name, he was rightfully named the Player of the Tournament.
Though unable to attend the awards ceremony in person due to national team obligations, Troost-Ekong’s award was accepted by Egyptian star and close friend Omar Tarek, whom he publicly thanked on social media,
“Unfortunately I couldn't make it; I am in transit, and I will be travelling to join the national team later today, so I couldn't make it to the ceremony. I want to say a big thank you to everyone at the ANFA Awards, first of all to be nominated, and now, from what I understand, to have won the prize, so it is a big honour for me. I have got my dear friend Omar, who is there to receive the prize on my behalf. I wish you a wonderful evening, and hopefully, in the coming years, I will be able to attend there in person. Thank you so much, everyone at ANFA Awards.,” he wrote.
In addition to his recent accolade, the Al Kholood defender finds himself on the prestigious shortlist for the CAF African Footballer of the Year, standing alongside fellow Nigerian Ademola Lookman of Atalanta and other African talents. The nomination complements the award and proves him as a leading player on the continent.
Now, the 31-year-old defender heads into the international break on a high, ready to lead his team as they face Benin Republic and Rwanda in upcoming African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
