Former Netherlands midfielder Wesley Sneijder has sharply criticised the quality of the UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg between Arsenal and Atletico Madrid, claiming the match should have been cancelled.

The encounter, played on Tuesday, was decided by a first-half goal from Bukayo Saka, which proved enough to secure victory for Arsenal in a tightly contested but largely uneventful game.

Speaking on Ziggo Sport, Sneijder expressed frustration with what he described as a lack of quality and entertainment in the high-stakes fixture. He argued that the standard of football fell well below expectations for a competition as prestigious as the UEFA Champions League.

“I said after 35 minutes, UEFA must intervene,” Sneijder remarked. “They need to call London: both teams off the pitch, and tomorrow the final will be played between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.”

His comments, though clearly tongue-in-cheek, underscored his dissatisfaction with the tactical approach adopted during the match. Sneijder criticised Atletico Madrid’s defensive setup, suggesting that their strategy contributed significantly to the lack of spectacle.

“I knew this would happen. Atletico dropped back and gave away possession, and Arsenal had a lot of control over the ball,” he added.

The match saw Arsenal dominate possession for long periods, while Atletico Madrid focused on a compact defensive structure and counter-attacking opportunities. However, the approach resulted in limited goal-scoring chances and a subdued tempo, drawing criticism from fans and pundits alike.

Despite the negative assessment, Arsenal will be encouraged by the result, having secured a crucial victory in their bid for European success. Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, may face scrutiny over their conservative tactics in such a decisive fixture.

Sneijder’s remarks reflect a broader debate within football about the balance between tactical discipline and entertainment, particularly in elite competitions where expectations for quality are exceptionally high.
