- Salah wants to stay at Liverpool but may consider a move to Saudi Arabia if the club fails to meet his demands
- Lovren believes Liverpool does not respect Salah enough, despite his consistent performances and record-breaking stats
- Salah has publicly stated his desire to stay at Anfield, but uncertainty looms as no deal has been reached
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah’s future at Anfield remains uncertain, and according to his close friend and former teammate Dejan Lovren, the Egyptian star is "closer to leaving than staying."
With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, negotiations over an extension appear to have stalled.
Lovren, who played alongside Salah for three years at Liverpool, shared insights into the forward’s current situation, revealing that the 31-year-old is frustrated with how the club is handling his contract negotiations. Despite Salah’s consistent performances and unwavering commitment to the club, Lovren suggested that Liverpool may not be offering him the level of respect he deserves.
In a recent interview, Lovren admitted he has had private conversations with Salah about the matter.
“We are still in touch. We talk every now and then. I have to be careful what I say now because I know a lot of things,” he stated.
While Lovren did not disclose exact details, he insisted that Salah’s incredible statistics over the past five to six years should have been enough to secure him a long-term deal already.
The Croatian went on to highlight how Salah continues to deliver world-class performances, despite being in his early 30s. He compared the Liverpool forward to Cristiano Ronaldo, pointing out that age should not be a factor in contract negotiations,
“He’s still playing for the national team, he’s scoring goals, he’s in great shape. What’s the problem? If it was Messi or Ronaldo, there would be talk every day about why his contract hasn’t been renewed.”
Lovren suggested that Salah himself is aware of the club’s reluctance to meet his demands and that the player feels undervalued,
“Salah believes there are things missing from the club side. I hope they’ll be resolved soon. But the current reality is that he’s closer to leaving than staying.”
Despite the uncertainty, Lovren confirmed that Salah still loves Liverpool and would prefer to extend his stay. However, he acknowledged that a move to Saudi Arabia could be a realistic option if an agreement is not reached.
“He loves Liverpool, by the way. He loves Liverpool a lot, and he wants to stay. That’s the most important part,” Lovren concluded.
For now, Salah’s future remains up in the air, with Liverpool facing a crucial decision on whether to meet his demands or risk losing one of their greatest-ever players.
