Manchester United’s interim head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy has shed light on the emotional moment shared with Erik Ten Hag just hours before the former United manager’s abrupt exit was confirmed.
After two years at the helm of managerial affairs, Ten Hag was officially sacked by Manchester United on Monday, October 28, ending a tenure marked by two cup victories.
With Ten Hag's departure, United has turned to Van Nistelrooy as interim manager, a role the former United striker is stepping into while the club reportedly works on appointing Ruben Amorim as a long-term replacement.
Speaking about his last encounter with Ten Hag, Van Nistelrooy described the moment as deeply emotional,
“I saw him on Monday and spoke to him before the (Leicester) game, he was disappointed and touched because he really cared for the club. That’s why he’s also hurt that he had to leave, but also proud of his achievement here winning the two cups,” he said.
Talking about his new responsibilities, Van Nistelrooy acknowledged the temporary nature of his role, stating,
“It’s going to be a short job as an interim – that was communicated very clearly, and I was happy with that, I decided to come back here for a very important reason: that I am here as an assistant. I came here to help the club forward, and I am still very motivated to do so in any capacity.”
Van Nistelrooy’s determination to support United remains strong, with his sights set on ensuring a seamless transition as he holds the fort until Amorim’s anticipated arrival,
“After this, I go back to my assistant contract I have here for this season and the next. I am very motivated to stay here and help the club forward,” he reiterated.
The interim manager acknowledged the difficult circumstances surrounding Ten Hag's exit but emphasised the importance of moving forward. Manchester United prepares for a critical clash against Chelsea, with fans looking forward to how the team can manage an ultra-attacking Chelsea side.
