Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has clarified his decision regarding the club’s captaincy during the absence of Reece James, following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday.

With James sidelined due to a hamstring injury sustained in March 2026, Enzo Fernandez was handed the captain’s armband for the encounter at Stamford Bridge. The Argentine midfielder had only recently returned from a two-match suspension following a controversial interview.

Despite the temporary captaincy role, Rosenior emphasised that the club operates with a broader leadership structure rather than relying on a single figure.

“The decision is that we have a leadership group. I believe that wearing the armband is a privilege for this club,” Rosenior explained after the match.

He was, however, quick to praise Fernández’s performance, describing it as exemplary despite the disappointing result.

“Enzo performed like a captain today. I thought he was outstanding; he exerted himself fully, gave his all, played offensively, and was unfortunate not to score on a few occasions,” he said.

“I am extremely pleased with his performance and with him, even though we did not achieve the result we felt we deserved or needed tonight.”

Chelsea’s evening was further overshadowed by injury concerns, with young forward Willian Estevao forced off in the first half after suffering a suspected hamstring problem. The 18-year-old, who has already missed six matches this season due to a similar issue, appeared visibly distressed as he left the pitch.

Rosenior revealed the emotional impact of the setback, noting that the player had been in tears at half-time.

“He was heartbroken; he was crying at halftime. I feel really sorry for him; it appears to be a hamstring issue,” the Chelsea boss said.

Estevão had been replaced by Alejandro Garnacho after sustaining the injury while making a forward run.

The defeat adds to Chelsea’s recent struggles, as they continue to contend with injuries and inconsistency in their campaign. Attention will now turn to their upcoming fixtures as Rosenior seeks to steady the squad and maintain competitiveness in the closing stages of the season.
