Cristiano Ronaldo is far from done with Erik ten Hag. The Portuguese legend, now 39, has once again stoked the flames of his ongoing feud with the Manchester United manager.
Ronaldo, who left United in bitter circumstances during the 2022/23 season after a falling-out with Ten Hag, has made it clear he hasn’t forgiven or forgotten.
The saga, which resulted in his abrupt departure from Old Trafford, has resurfaced with Ronaldo’s harsh critique of both Ten Hag’s tactics and Manchester United’s ambitions.
The former Real Madrid star’s comments come after United’s slow start to the current Premier League campaign, with Ten Hag recently admitting that the club is “a long way” from challenging for major titles.
But Ronaldo, never one to mince his words, had a different opinion. “Manchester United needs to rebuild everything,” Ronaldo declared.
“The coach says they cannot compete to win the league and Champions League. Manchester United coach, you cannot say that you're not going to fight to win the league or Champions League.”
Ronaldo’s frustration with Ten Hag dates back to his infamous exit from Manchester United in January 2023. After being benched and frozen out by the Dutchman, Ronaldo aired his grievances in a tell-all interview with Piers Morgan, where he expressed feeling “betrayed” by the club and admitted he had “no respect” for Ten Hag.
“If you don't have respect for me, I'm never gonna have respect for you,” Ronaldo firmly stated during the interview.
Ten Hag, on the other hand, has expressed both caution and confidence in two separate interviews about his squad. Speaking before the season began, Ten Hag said,
“We want this club back to where it was more than a decade ago, to a club that wins the Premier League, which can win Champions Leagues. We are really a long way away from that.” However, in a more recent interview, Ten Hag seemed more confident despite a slow start,
“We are confident. We have a good team, we have a good squad. We want to win every competition in which we are taking part, definitely also the Premier League.”
Even though his second stint at United ended acrimoniously, Ronaldo reiterated his affection for the club, “I still love Manchester United and I wish them the best,” he concluded.
