  • Manchester United stunned rivals Manchester City with a dramatic 2-1 derby victory, courtesy of Amad Diallo’s last-minute heroics
  • Diallo won a late penalty converted by Bruno Fernandes before scoring the winner, as City’s poor run extended to one win in 11 matches
  • City’s struggles leave them fifth on the league table, while United climb to 12th with new boss Ruben Amorim earning his second league win

The Manchester derby delivered a pulsating finale after a sluggish start, with Manchester United clawing back to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory over arch-rivals Manchester City.

Amad Diallo emerged as the hero, playing an important role in both goals that sealed the win for the Red Devils.

City looked in control early on and broke the deadlock in the 36th minute when Josko Gvardiol capitalised on United's frailty against set pieces, nodding home from a cleverly executed short corner. The opening goal was the highlight of a first half marred by lacklustre play and palpable tension from both sides.

The second half initially followed a similar pattern, with City holding their narrow lead. However, United began to grow into the game, showing more intent. Their persistence paid off in the 86th minute when Diallo earned a penalty after being clumsily brought down in the box. Bruno Fernandes coolly converted from the spot, restoring the visitors’ hopes.

The match seemed like it going to end in a draw, but Diallo had other ideas. In the dying moments, the Ivorian latched onto a long ball, effortlessly bypassed goalkeeper Ederson, and slotted into an empty net, sparking wild celebrations among the United fans.

The defeat gave another blow to Pep Guardiola's side, who have now won just once in their last 11 outings across all competitions. The reigning champions find themselves languishing in fifth place, nine points adrift of league leaders Liverpool, despite playing an extra game.

Guardiola admitted after the match that his side’s struggles have left him searching for solutions, stating,

“We didn’t play our best... It’s a tough season.”

For United, the victory marked their second league triumph under new manager Ruben Amorim, lifting them to 12th in the table. Amorim praised his team’s resilience, particularly Diallo’s match-winning contributions.

Up next, United face Tottenham in the League Cup quarter-finals on Thursday, December 19, while City travel to Aston Villa on Saturday, December 21. Guardiola will be desperate to stop the bad run, but with confidence waning, the road ahead looks steep for the champions.

Amorim ready to offload two Man Utd stars in January transfer window

Previously, TheRadar reported that Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim appears ready to make bold decisions regarding his squad, as reports from Manchester suggest the Portuguese tactician is prepared to offload two high-profile players during the January transfer window.

The former Sporting CP manager, who replaced Erik ten Hag in November, has endured a turbulent start at Old Trafford and is eager to reshape his team for the remainder of the season.
