The Super Falcons of Nigeria face Spain in the second game of the Olympics on Sunday, July 28. The Super Falcons of Nigeria will lock horns with Spain on Sunday, July 28.
  • Super Falcons will look to cause an upset against the reigning world champions, Spain
  • The Nigerian side will look to improve its defence
  • Here is a prediction of the line-up, and a preview of the match against Spain

At exactly 6 pm (WAT) on Sunday, July 28, Nigeria’s Super Falcons will be underway against the Spanish national women’s team at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Paris. The women’s team led by Montserrat Tomé currently holds the number one spot in the world women’s football ranking. The Super Falcons are again ready to test themselves against a brilliant side. The Super Falcons need at least a draw in this match if they still wish to keep their hopes of play-off alive.

Nigeria meets Spain for the first time

Today’s meeting will be the first time Nigeria and Spain will play in an international women’s football fixture. The Spanish women’s team has won 16 of their last 19 matches and scored in 19 consecutive games. This is a huge worry for the Super Falcons, who were goal-shy in their most recent match against Brazil. Nigeria has undoubtedly dominated the African continent, but the Spanish team holds the number one spot in the world ranking of women’s football. However, Nigeria must rely on its star players like Rasheedat Ajibade, Asisat Oshoala, and Chiamaka Nnadozie to cause a major upset.

Can we see a difference from the Super Falcons match vs Brazil?

If we are to see a major difference from the last match against Brazil, it certainly will have to be the team's defensive department, especially the wingbacks. The wingbacks have more intuitive work to do serving the wingers while not leaving too much space at the defence, so the pacy Spanish forwards do not exploit the space behind. However, the Super Falcons can only hope for a favourable outcome in this match.

Possible lineup and predictions against the Spanish side

Based on statistics, the Spanish team is a clear favourite for this game, and it is only left for the Super Falcons to prove us wrong. A win in this match secures Spain a spot in the quarter-finals, while a win for Nigeria’s women's team can keep their hopes alive for the quarter-finals round.
