Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili has successfully secured her spot in the semifinals of the Women's 200m at the Paris 2024 Olympics, delivering a remarkable performance in the heats.

Recall that Ofili had earlier been disqualified from the 100-metre race after some administrative blunder that left her unregistered.

However, she has put aside her earlier frustration to record success as she looks to make her mark at the ongoing games in Paris and prove naysayers wrong.

Competing in Heat 6, Ofili clocked an impressive time of 22.24 seconds, securing a first-place finish and automatic qualification for the next round. Her time was the second-fastest overall among all heats, indicating her strong position in the field.

Ofili faced formidable competitors in her heat, including Great Britain's Dina Asher-Smith, who finished second with a time of 22.28 seconds, and Gambia's Gina Bass, who finished third with a time of 22.84 seconds. Both Asher-Smith and Bass have also advanced to the semifinals, setting up an exciting competition ahead.

The Paris 2024 Olympics have already witnessed outstanding performances in the Women's 200m event. Daryll Neita from Great Britain recorded a time of 22.39 seconds, while the United States' Gabrielle Thomas ran a blistering 22.20 seconds in their respective heats, securing their places in the semifinals as well.

Favour Ofili's consistent and impressive performances on the international stage continue to elevate Nigeria's profile in athletics.

The semifinals for the Women's 200m are scheduled to take place Monday, August 5. The first semifinal heat will begin at 19:45 local time, followed by the second heat at 19:54, and the final heat at 20:03. These races will determine the finalists who will compete for Olympic glory in one of the most prestigious events in track and field.

Earlier, Nigeria’s women’s basketball team emerged victorious over Canada, winning 79-70, and recording a place in the quarterfinals, an unprecedented feat for the country.
