Romania gets their only medal at the Paris 2024 GamesRomania’s Barbosu wins the only medal for her country at the Olympics
  • The Olympic bronze medal for the women’s artistic gymnastics floor exercise has been taken away from American gymnast Chiles and given to Romania’s Barbosu
  • This was because of a four-second late appeal
  • The US Olympic and Paralympic Committee has condemned online trolls, while Chiles has prioritised her health in light of the incident

American gymnast Jordan Chiles loses her bronze medal in the floor exercise following a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The CAS found that Chiles' appeal was submitted four seconds after the permitted one-minute window.

Consequently, her score has been adjusted from 13.766 to her original 13.666. This score was now lower than that of Romania’s Ana Barbosu, who achieved a 13.700, securing third place. CAS therefore instructed the Federation of International Gymnastics (FIG) to “determine the rankings of the floor exercise and assign the medal(s) in accordance with the (CAS) decision.”

On Saturday night, 10th August, FIG confirmed this ruling, reinstating Chiles' original score of 13.666 and moving Barbosu to third place.

"The ranking of the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Floor Exercise Finals has been modified accordingly with Ana Barbosu ranking third with a score of 13.700," the FIG stated.

US Olympic and Paralympic Committee condemns online trolls

The Federation of International Gymnastics (FIG) has confirmed that Ana Barbosu of Romania has been promoted from fourth to third place due to a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The CAS ruling upheld the Romanian Olympic Committee's appeal, which contended that the US team's inquiry regarding Chiles' score was submitted after the one-minute deadline and should be dismissed.

As a result, Chiles' original score has been reinstated, moving her to fifth place.

Both USA Gymnastics and the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee have stated they are "devastated" by the outcome and have criticised the "consistent, utterly baseless and extremely hurtful attacks" directed at Chiles on social media during the appeal.

"Throughout the appeal process, Jordan has been subject to consistent, utterly baseless and extremely hurtful attacks on social media. No athlete should be subject to such treatment. We condemn the attacks and those who engage, support or instigate them. We commend Jordan for conducting herself with integrity both on and off the competition floor, and we continue to stand by and support her," they said in a statement.

Gymnast Chiles reacts to her medal revoke

After a court decision reversed her bronze medal result from the gymnastics floor final at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Jordan Chiles spoke out.

The Team USA gymnast reacted to the change by posting on social media. Through her Instagram story, Chiles used broken heart emojis and indicated that she would be "removing myself from social media for my mental health."

Latest bronze medalist Barbosu says she “can’t believe it”

Ana Barbosu, an 18-year-old gymnast from Romania, has been awarded the medal by the Federation of International Gymnastics (FIG).

Barbosu expressed her astonishment, stating, “I can barely express my emotions, I can’t believe it,” in an interview with Romanian media. She described her reaction to the news: “When I heard the news, I was afraid it wasn’t true, and once I was sure, I hugged my parents and called everyone who had helped me.

The CAS ruling came in response to an appeal from the Romanian Gymnastics Federation and gymnasts Barbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea. It was determined that the appeal regarding Chiles’ difficulty level was submitted after the allowed one-minute timeframe and should not have been considered.

Paris Olympics 2024: France’s Samba-Mayela may be disqualified after stunning footage emerges

Previously, TheRadar reported that France athlete Cyréna Samba-Mayela could face disqualification after footage emerged that she stepped out of her line before reaching the finish line of the 100-metre hurdles race.

This may mean good news for Nigerians who watched their representative Tobi Amusan come agonisingly close but finish just outside the green line, as the disqualification of Samba-Mayela could mean good news for Amusan.
