- Manchester United’s Ruben Amorim insists that winning the Europa League will not make United’s season a success
- The Red Devils currently sit 14th in the Premier League, winning just three of their last 11 games
- The manager acknowledged the ongoing public criticism but insists United must improve as a team
Premier League side Manchester United’s hopes for silverware this season now rest solely on their UEFA Europa League campaign, but manager Ruben Amorim has dismissed the idea that winning the competition would redeem what has been an underwhelming campaign.
The Red Devils are set to face Real Sociedad in the Europa League last 16, having progressed through the knockout stages despite their domestic struggles.
Their last match saw them exit the FA Cup in the fifth round after a disappointing loss to Fulham at Old Trafford, increasing the pressure on Amorim, who has failed to improve United’s Premier League standing since his arrival in November, 2024.
Currently languishing in 14th place, United have won only three of their last 11 league matches. Speaking to the press ahead of the European clash, Amorim admitted that even lifting the Europa League trophy would not be enough to consider the season a success,
"People look at this competition as the only competition that can save our season. I don't see it like that. Nothing can save our season," Amorim said.
He emphasised that at a club of United’s stature, success cannot be measured by one competition alone,
"In this club, you have to perform in every competition," he added, acknowledging the immense pressure surrounding his squad.
One of United’s biggest struggles this season has been their lack of goals. Striker Rasmus Hojlund has endured a difficult spell, scoring just seven times all season, with his last league goal dating back 18 games to December.
However, the Europa League has been a rare bright spot for the Danish forward, who has netted five of his goals in the competition.
Amorim expressed hope that the return of European action could help Hojlund rediscover his form,
"One game can change your way of seeing yourself," he said, suggesting that a strong performance in the Europa League could turn things around for the striker.
While questions continue to swirl about his future at United, Amorim remained defiant, acknowledging the never-ending scrutiny that comes with managing the club,
"This club has all the noises. If one subject ends, they will start another," he stated, accepting that criticism is part of the job.
With United’s league campaign in disarray, Amorim knows that winning the Europa League won’t erase the disappointment, but it may at least offer some consolation.
Amorim to offload two Man Utd stars in January transfer window
Previously, TheRadar reported that Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim appears ready to make bold decisions regarding his squad, as reports from Manchester suggest the Portuguese tactician is prepared to offload two high-profile players during the January transfer window.
The former Sporting CP manager, who replaced Erik ten Hag in November, has endured a turbulent start at Old Trafford and is eager to reshape his team for the remainder of the season.
