The Flying Eagles of Nigeria secured an important 2-1 win against Côte d'Ivoire in their final group match of the WAFU B U20 Championship, taking them to the semifinals.
After a narrow 1-0 defeat to Burkina Faso, Nigeria faced the pressure of potential elimination, but Clinton Jephta and Kparobo Arierhi’s goals reversed their fate, delivering a crucial victory over the Young Elephants. The win saw Nigeria top Group B, while Côte d'Ivoire advanced as runners-up, eliminating Burkina Faso from the tournament.
Coach Aliyu Zubairu hailed the determination and resilience his side demonstrated throughout the contest, particularly after falling behind early,
“We showed resilience and determination,” Zubairu stated.
He also mentioned that the team took valuable lessons from the previous defeat, using it as motivation to mount a resilient comeback against Côte d'Ivoire.
He attributed the success to tactical changes and mental strength, which enabled the Flying Eagles to stage a spirited comeback,
“This win was a testament to the hard work we’ve been putting in since our defeat,” Zubairu added.
With a semifinal showdown against Niger Republic looming, the stakes are high as Nigeria aims to defend their WAFU B title and secure a spot at the U20 Africa Cup of Nations.
Zubairu expressed confidence in his team’s ability to continue their winning run, stating,
“We’re delighted with the victory and look forward to the semi-finals.”
As they prepare for their next match, the Flying Eagles have their eyes set on both WAFU B glory and a place in the U20 AFCON, the team is also confident that the positive energy from the Côte d'Ivoire win will be advantageous for them going forward as they are eager to push towards defending their WAFU B title.
