Felix Anyansi-Agwu, the first vice president of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and a revered figure in Nigerian football, is recovering after a terrifying armed robbery at his residence in Gwarinpa Estate, Abuja.

The incident occurred during the early hours of Wednesday, January 8, and left the football administrator injured but alive.

The attackers reportedly broke into the residence, seizing valuable items including a vehicle, mobile phones, cash, and other belongings worth millions of naira. Despite the harrowing experience, no lives were lost during the invasion, which could have taken a far more tragic turn.

The NFF, led by President Ibrahim Gusau, has rallied around Anyansi-Agwu in the aftermath of the incident. Gusau, accompanied by NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, visited the family to show support and offer prayers for a swift recovery.

In a statement, Sanusi expressed the federation’s concern, saying,

“The NFF President has been to the house of Chief Anyansi-Agwu. I will also be going to his house shortly to empathise with him and his family. This is an unwholesome incident, and the Executive Committee, Management, and Staff of NFF feel the stress of the Anyansi-Agwu family at this period.”

Anyansi-Agwu has been a towering figure in Nigerian football for decades. As chairman of Enyimba International FC, he masterminded the club’s back-to-back CAF Champions League victories in 2003 and 2004.

These historic achievements marked Nigeria’s first successes in the competition and earned him consecutive African Football Manager of the Year awards. His contributions have left an indelible mark on the sport's development in the country.

The football community has reacted with outrage and concern to this latest attack, calling for improved security measures in residential areas to curb rising incidents of armed robbery. Many have pointed out the growing sense of insecurity in the region, urging authorities to intensify efforts to protect citizens. As investigations continue, there is hope that the perpetrators will be swiftly brought to justice.
