Premier League club Nottingham Forest shocked Manchester United with a remarkable 3-2 victory at Old Trafford, plunging the Red Devils into further tactical crisis. The defeat marked United’s second consecutive loss under manager Ruben Amorim, as Forest climbed into the Premier League’s top five.
The visitors wasted no time, taking the lead within two minutes. Nikola Milenkovic rose above the United defence to head home a corner, his first goal for Forest. The goal reflects a recurring issue for United’s defence, who have now conceded from three set-pieces in their last three matches.
Manchester United responded with intensity, and their persistence paid off in the 15th minute. Rasmus Hojlund pounced on a rebound after Alejandro Garnacho’s close-range shot was parried, levelling the score. Both teams pushed for a lead before halftime, hitting the woodwork through Jota Silva and Bruno Fernandes, but the teams entered the break deadlocked at 1-1.
Forest seized control early in the second half. Morgan Gibbs-White unleashed a speculative long-range effort that caught Andre Onana off guard, the goalkeeper wrong-footed as the ball nestled into the net. Seven minutes later, a shaky Onana failed to react as Chris Wood’s looping header sailed over him and past Lisandro Martinez at the far post, putting Forest 3-1 up. The goal made Wood Forest’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League.
Despite the setback, United pressed forward. Amad Diallo, making an impact off the bench, set up Fernandes for a thunderous strike that reduced the deficit to 3-2. However, Forest’s defence held firm to secure a famous victory.
The result leaves United in 13th place, enduring their worst start to a league campaign since the 1986/87 season. Manager Amorim had earlier predicted these issues when he admitted that the club is in a challenging phase, cautioning fans that "things will get worse before they get better."
United now face mounting pressure with the Manchester derby looming, while Forest continue their impressive climb, sitting just two points off the top four.
Rashford labours in vain as Amorim’s men struggle in manager’s first game
Previously, TheRadar reported that Ruben Amorim’s much-anticipated tenure as Manchester United manager began with frustration as his side settled for a 1-1 draw against newly-promoted Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
Marcus Rashford opened the scoring brilliantly within the first 90 seconds, but despite a good performance, Amorim’s men failed to score another goal, leaving them languishing in 12th place in the Premier League table.
