Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has described his side’s latest European achievement as a landmark moment in the club’s history after guiding them into the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

The Gunners secured progression on Wednesday night following a goalless draw against Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium in the second leg of their quarter-final tie. The result ensured Arsenal advanced 1-0 on aggregate, booking their place in the last four of the competition.

Arsenal will now face Atlético Madrid in the semi-finals later this month, as they continue their pursuit of a first Champions League title. The achievement also marks a continuation of their strong European form, having reached the same stage in the previous season.

Speaking after the match, Arteta praised the determination and resilience of his players, particularly in the face of a demanding season and a long list of injuries to key personnel.

“My message was gratitude to [the players]. I know the effort and the commitment that they put in,” he said. “There was a lot of work behind it, and we’ve done something that has never been done in the history of our club.”

The Arsenal boss suggested that the achievement carried extra significance given the circumstances, pointing to the absence of several important players throughout the campaign. He credited the squad’s collective effort and adaptability in overcoming those challenges.

“We had to do it in a special way, missing a lot of important players, so big credit for that,” Arteta added.

While Arsenal’s performance against Sporting CP lacked attacking flair, with both sides failing to produce a breakthrough on the night, the result ultimately mattered more than the display. The north London club showed defensive discipline to secure the narrow aggregate victory that sent them through.

The semi-final berth represents another step forward in Arsenal’s ongoing development under Arteta, as they continue to establish themselves among Europe’s elite. However, tougher challenges lie ahead, with Atlético Madrid expected to provide a stern test of their credentials.

Attention now shifts between domestic and European commitments, as Arsenal attempt to balance a demanding schedule while maintaining momentum in both competitions. For Arteta, the focus remains on sustaining the mentality and consistency that have brought the club to this historic stage.
