  • Josh Maja scores his fifth goal in five matches for West Brom, only Haaland boasts a better record in the top 4 England division
  • Dele-Bashiru nets his first goal of the season for Watford in a 1-1 draw
  • West Brom coach, Carlos Corberán praises Josh Maja’s hard work and mentality after his stellar performance

Super Eagles players were in electrifying form over the weekend, lighting up European football with standout performances that had fans in awe. From Josh Maja’s early strike to Frank Onyeka’s Bundesliga debut, Nigerian stars took centre stage.

Josh Maja wasted no time making his mark in West Brom’s clash against Portsmouth, finding the back of the net only seconds after kickoff.

The Nigerian striker’s lethal form continued, scoring his fifth goal in just five league games this season leading the Championship goal charts. As of now, only Erling Haaland of Manchester City has outscored Maja in the top four divisions of English football.

His contributions helped push West Brom to the top of the Championship standings, with Alex Mowatt’s brace sealing the 3-0 victory.

Defensively, Semi Ajayi was a rock, helping West Brom secure their third clean sheet in five matches.

West Brom manager Carlos Corberán praised Maja’s form, emphasising his determination after overcoming injuries last season.

“We know he is an important player for us. We couldn’t enjoy Josh too much last year because he had two injuries in the same place. His mentality, his commitment, and hard work are now giving him the consequences,” Corberán said.

In another spectacular fixture, Super Eagles midfielder Dele-Bashiru opened his goal account for the season in Watford’s 1-1 draw with Coventry City. The Nigerian midfielder was key in cancelling out Ellis Simms’ opener for the Sky Blues, scoring on the hour mark.

In a post-match interview, Bashiru acknowledged his team’s slow start but praised their second-half improvement.

“Second-half we came out better, we controlled the game for most parts of the half. It is very important for me to add goals to my game, so I’m pleased to get one today,” he said.

Meanwhile, Frank Onyeka made a thunderous start to his Bundesliga career with Augsburg, contributing to their 3-1 win over FC St. Pauli.

After missing Augsburg's previous game due to international duty, Onyeka shone on his debut, coming close to scoring twice and providing a sublime assist for Phillip Tietz’s second-half goal. Onyeka’s lightning pace stood out in the match statistics, clocking a top speed of 32.57 km/h, placing him among the fastest players on the field.

Moses Simon also had a productive outing, delivering an assist in Nantes’ narrow defeat to Reims. The Nigerian forward set up Douglas for Nantes’ opening goal, but despite his efforts and solid statistics, 59 touches, 79% pass accuracy, and six successful dribbles, Nantes fell to a late 2-1 loss after Reims’ Keito Nakamura netted in injury time.

With these superb performances, it’s clear that Nigeria’s Super Eagles continue to impress in Europe’s top leagues and will hopefully continue this form for Nigeria in the next AFCON qualifying outing.

Osimhen eyes Odegbami’s record in Super Eagles’ game against Rwanda

Previously, TheRadar reported that Victor Osimhen added another chapter to his remarkable career, becoming Nigeria’s third-highest goal scorer by netting his 22nd goal in a 3-0 win against Benin Republic on Saturday, September 7.

Osimhen’s contributions were crucial as Nigeria opened its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. His goal helped secure a comfortable win for the team and further etched his name in the annals of Nigerian football.
