Liverpool icon Sir Kenny Dalglish has revealed that he is currently undergoing treatment for cancer, while appealing for privacy for himself and his family during the period.
The 75-year-old football legend disclosed the diagnosis in a statement shared on social media, explaining that he had not intended to make the matter public but was forced to address it after an accidental online post.
According to reports by BBC Sport on Tuesday, June 2, Dalglish reassured supporters that his treatment was progressing positively.
"I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Unlike my mobile phone use, the treatment is going well," he said in a light-hearted remark.
The former Liverpool and Celtic star admitted that he would have preferred to keep the diagnosis private.
"Ideally, this would have remained private because that's the way it should be, but my useless technology skills have forced my hand," Dalglish stated.
He also appealed to the public and media to respect his family's privacy as he continues treatment.
"Obviously I did not mean to make this matter public so I would appreciate it if the privacy of my family and myself are respected," he added.
Dalglish used the opportunity to express gratitude to the healthcare professionals caring for him, commending their dedication and professionalism.
"As ever, thank you to the wonderful medical staff who have shown incredible care and discretion, not just for me but for many, many others. They are a credit to themselves," he said.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest figures in British football history, Dalglish enjoyed a glittering playing career.
He scored 167 goals in 320 appearances for Celtic between 1969 and 1977 before moving to Liverpool, where he made 515 appearances and cemented his status as one of the club's most celebrated players.
At international level, he represented Scotland 102 times and scored 30 goals for his country.
Following the announcement, Liverpool Football Club issued a message of support for their former player and manager.
"The support, best wishes and love of everyone at Liverpool FC are, and will be, with Sir Kenny and his family," the club said.
The club also reiterated Dalglish's request for privacy as he focuses on his treatment and recovery.
