Liverpool have officially appointed Spanish coach Andoni Iraola as their new manager following the dismissal of Arne Slot after a disappointing Premier League title defence.

The 43-year-old former Bournemouth boss emerged as the club’s preferred candidate shortly after Slot was relieved of his duties last weekend.

While Liverpool did not disclose the details of Iraola’s contract, reports in the British media indicate he has signed a two-year deal.

Speaking after his appointment, Iraola expressed his excitement about taking charge at one of football’s most iconic clubs.

“Really excited, really excited, because obviously you know about Liverpool, you know that it’s a big club, a massive club, one of the biggest in the world,” he said.

The Spaniard added that his understanding of the club has only strengthened his admiration for it.

“But feeling inside and understanding a little bit more of this club, I always thought it’s a special club. You don’t need a lot of things to get attracted by Liverpool. Liverpool is Liverpool.”

Iraola arrives at Anfield with a growing reputation as one of Europe’s most promising managers. During his three-year spell at Bournemouth, he transformed the club into one of the Premier League’s most exciting sides, guiding them from 12th place to ninth before achieving a historic sixth-place finish this season and securing qualification for the Europa League.

His success on the south coast was built on an energetic, attacking style of football that earned praise across England. Liverpool supporters will hope he can bring similar intensity to a team that struggled throughout the 2025/26 campaign.

The Reds endured a difficult season under Slot, who had initially enjoyed a dream start after replacing Jurgen Klopp in 2024.

The Dutchman guided Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th English league title in his first season, powered by Mohamed Salah’s remarkable goal-scoring form.

However, Liverpool failed to build on that success. A poor run of performances saw the club slide down the table, eventually finishing fifth and ending the season without silverware.

Several factors contributed to the club’s decline. The tragic death of forward Diogo Jota in a car accident last year deeply affected the squad, while a significant £450 million investment in new players failed to deliver the expected results. Reports of tensions between Slot and Salah, combined with uninspiring performances on the pitch, further increased pressure on the manager.

Prior to Slot’s departure, Salah publicly called for a return to the “heavy metal football” style that brought Liverpool so much success under Klopp. Iraola’s tactical philosophy appears closely aligned with that vision.

Known for his aggressive pressing system and attack-minded approach, the former Athletic Bilbao defender has repeatedly spoken about his desire to play proactive football. His ability to develop young talents such as Eli Junior Kroupi and Alex Scott also played a key role in Liverpool’s decision to appoint him.

Born in Spain’s Basque region, Iraola made more than 500 appearances for Athletic Bilbao before ending his playing career in Major League Soccer with New York City FC. He later began a coaching journey that included spells with AEK Larnaca, Mirandés, Rayo Vallecano and Bournemouth.

Now, he faces perhaps the biggest challenge of his managerial career: restoring Liverpool to the summit of English and European football and reigniting the attacking identity that fans have long cherished.

Arne Slot confident of long-term Liverpool future as transfer planning begins

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that Liverpool manager Arne Slot had expressed strong confidence in his position at Anfield, insisting he expects to remain in charge of the club beyond the current season as preparations for the next campaign intensify.

Slot’s comments, reported by Fabrizio Romano on X, came amid growing attention on Liverpool’s long-term squad planning and upcoming summer transfer activities.

He further revealed that Liverpool has already begun early strategic planning for the next season, with internal discussions underway regarding potential transfer targets and squad improvements.
