- Kaizer Chiefs submitted an offer to sign free agent Stanley Nwabali
- Brandon Petersen underwent appendix surgery, leaving his return date uncertain
- Chiefs trailed in the Betway Premiership title race after losing the Soweto derby
South African giants Kaizer Chiefs have renewed their interest in Nigeria international goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali following the appendix surgery of first-choice keeper Brandon Petersen.
According to reports from Afrik-Foot, Chiefs have submitted an offer to sign the 29-year-old free agent as they seek experienced cover during Petersen’s absence.
Petersen underwent surgery on Friday and was expected to be discharged from hospital on Monday. However, his return to action remains uncertain, with recovery from an appendectomy typically ranging between three and six weeks.
His absence was immediately felt as Chiefs suffered a 3-0 defeat in the Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates, with Bruce Bvuma stepping in between the posts. The loss left the Soweto giants 11 points behind in the Betway Premiership title race.
Nwabali has been without a club since departing Chippa United earlier this year, making him an attractive option on a free transfer. His availability, combined with his experience in South African football, has reportedly prompted Chiefs to accelerate their pursuit.
The shot-stopper previously attracted interest from Chiefs during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where his impressive performances helped Nigeria secure a bronze medal. His commanding displays and consistency enhanced his reputation as one of the Super Eagles’ most dependable goalkeepers in recent years.
Having made 66 appearances in the Betway Premiership, Nwabali is well acquainted with the demands of South African football, a factor that could ease any potential transition back into the league.
Chiefs are also grappling with injuries to Rushwin Dortley, George Matlou and Given Msimango, further stretching squad depth at a crucial stage of the campaign.
Before his illness, Petersen had been in fine form, notably helping Chiefs defeat Orlando Pirates 2-1 in last season’s Nedbank Cup final, ending a decade-long trophy drought.
With the title race intensifying and injuries mounting, Chiefs’ renewed move for Nwabali underlines their urgency to reinforce the squad as the season enters a decisive phase.
