- Leicester City came from 2-0 down to beat Southampton 3-2 at St Mary's Stadium
- Jamie Vardy equalised with a penalty after Southampton’s Fraser fouled him in the box
- Ghanaian striker Jordan Ayew scored the winning goal seven minutes into stoppage time
Southampton’s commanding first-half performance crumbled dramatically as Leicester City staged a brilliant comeback, capped off by Jordan Ayew’s stoppage-time winner.
The Saints had looked in complete control at the break, thanks to early strikes from Cameron Archer and Super Eagles player Joe Aribo. Archer finished off a Ryan Manning cross in just the 8th minute, and Aribo doubled the lead 20 minutes later with a composed finish from a Kyle Walker-Peters delivery.
Leicester, however, refused to lie down like lambs to the slaughter. Their moment of revival came about when manager Steve Cooper introduced Ghana’s Abdul Fatawu on the hour mark. Fatawu’s energy and vision turned the game on its head, as he set up Facundo Buonanotte for a tap-in that made Southampton almost immediately restless.
Moments later, Fatawu was at the heart of the action once again, hitting the crossbar with a stinging shot before forcing Aaron Ramsdale into a save with a powerful header.
Southampton’s lack of composure and confidence became even more glaring when Jamie Vardy was fouled by Ryan Fraser, resulting in a penalty and Fraser being sent off. Vardy calmly converted the penalty, bringing Leicester level.
With Southampton down to 10 men, Leicester continued to press tirelessly for the winner, and they were soon rewarded in stoppage time when Ayew slotted home the decisive goal.
Leicester’s manager Steve Cooper was impressed with his team’s fighting spirit after the match, he remarked,
“It ended up being a brilliant day and will hopefully be memorable for the season. We didn't defend the goals well enough in the first half, of course, but I always felt we were in the game. We missed a couple of chances in the first half from set-pieces, we hit the woodwork and thought we should have done better in the first half, I was also pretty confident the game could change. We asked the players at half-time, after the tactical things and some of the messages, to really believe in themselves, to really back themselves and to stick together - and that's what we did. Today's a really good show of how together we are.”
“It's a brilliant win for the supporters. It's the first away win of the season, we've gone back-to-back and we've got to take everything out of the game today, learn, continue to improve, continue to strive and we'll continue to get better as well.”
